RICHARDSON, TX (02.12.17) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its season Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 home victory over East Texas Baptist and then grabbed a 5-4 win at Austin College Sunday.
The Comets (2-0) will not return to action until March 12, when UTD opens its Spring Break trip at Oglethorpe.
UTD 9, ETBU 0
UTD stormed through doubles play unscathed and secured the match victory with two quick singles wins by
Mario Jelev (#3) and
Christian Duarte (#1). Jelev cruised past ETBU's Andrew Deutsch, 6-0, 6-1, before Jelev sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Tiger top-seeded Connor Mason.
Ryan Morton and
Eric Chen held off ETBU's Mason/Deutsch, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles while Jelev and Hruday Ravula won by the same score at No. 2 over Tigers Cody Highsmith/John Herr. Duarte and
Ashwin Vaithianathan completed the doubles sweep with an 8-0 win at No. 3.
In other singles action, Ravula downed Highsmith, 6-2, 7-6 (4), Morton defeated Herr, 6-3, 6-2, Chen defeated Joseph Salinas, 7-5, 6-4, and Vaithianathan defeated Rollin Houk, 6-1, 6-4.

The Comets fell behind after doubles play, but rallied in singles for a 5-4 win at Austin College to improve to 2-0.
Down 2-1 after doubles, the Comets got singles wins from Duarte (#1), Jelev (#3), Chen (#5) and Vaithanathan (#6) to complete the come-from-behind victory. Vaithanathan won the match-clincher as defeated AC's Preston Glasscock, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
