HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (03.14.17) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team continued its Spring Break road trip Tuesday with a pair of games at the Spring Tennis Fest.
The Comets (4-1) opened the day with a 6-3 loss to Millsaps before bouncing back for a 6-2 win over Belhaven. UTD will visit The Citadel Wednesday in match against the NCAA D-I Bulldogs at 6 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
MATCH 1 - Millsaps 6, UTD 3
The Comets fell behind 2-1 after doubles play and managed just two singles win in a 6-3 loss to Millsaps, earning their first defeat of the season.
Hrudhay Ravula and
Eric Chen each picked up singles wins for the Comets in the defeat. Ravula edged Millsaps' Davis Plummer, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5, at No. 4, and Chen swept Brandon Beck, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6.
Chen and
Ashwin Vaithianathan earned an 8-6 win over Henry Rriedler/Jacob Niehaus at No. 3 doubles.
MATCH 2 - UTD 6, Belhaven 2
The Comets responded from their first loss of the season late Tuesday with a 6-2, darkness-shortened win over Belhaven.
UTD picked up two doubles wins and then nearly swept singles play en route to the victory.
Mario Jelev (No. 2) and Albert Hernandez (No. 3) each earned three-set victories while Ravula and Vaithianathan collected straight set wins.
Jelev edged BU's Pawel Tarasewicz, 6-0, 4-6, 10-4, while Hernandez earned a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, win over Ivan Alberto Kerkoc. Ravula's second singles win of the day was a shot 6-4, 6-4, win over Sebastian Barrientos while Vaithianathan handled Owen Taylor, 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles action, Chen and
Christian Duarte grabbed an 8-3 win at No. 2 and Vaithianathan and
Ryan Morton won 8-3 at No. 3.
