GEORGETOWN, TX (10.05.18) - The UT Dallas volleyball team took the opening set but dropped the next three sets in a 3-1 road loss at Southwestern in non-conference play Friday night.
With the loss, the Comets drop to 12-7 overall and will return to action next weekend, Oct. 12-13, when they host the second of two American Southwest Conference crossover tournaments in the Activity Center Gym. UTD will face Hardin-Simmons at 11 am Friday, followed by a 5 pm match with McMurry. UTD will square off with Sul Ross State in a Family Day match at 2 pm on Saturday.
UTD jumped out quickly with a 25-15 win in the opening set, but the host Pirates responded with a 29-27 win in the second set to even the match. Southwestern (9-8) took the third set, 25-21, and rallied past the Comets in the fourth set, 28-26, to seal the victory in the battle of two perennial regional tournament participants.
Alex Nolan and
Lauren Schilling each had a team-best 13 kills while
Sydney Riordan and
Dylan Brinkman both contributed eight kills. Schilling collected eight blocks while Nolan added seven blocks as UTD finished the contest with a 13 team blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jillian Via led the Comets with five kills while Nolan added four kills in a 25-15 win by UTD in the opening set. The Comets hit .263 as a team, their best set of the night, with three blocks.
- The Comets hit just .190 in the second set in a 29-27 loss to Southwestern. Nolan led UTD with four kills and the Comets collected five blocks, three by Schilling.
- Southwestern took a 2-1 lead with a 25-21 win the third set as the Comets hit .222 as a team. Nolan led UTD with four kills while Schilling and Brinkman each had three kills.
- The Comets jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth set only to have Southwestern rally back for a 28-26 win to close the match. UTD hit just .143 as a team in the set with Brinkman finishing with a team-high three kills.
