Comets Close 2018 With 89-62 Romp of McMurry

ABILENE, TX (12.31.18) - In the final UT Dallas athletic event of 2018, the Comet men's basketball team rolled to an 89-62 road win over McMurry in American Southwest Conference crossover play Monday afternoon.

With their consecutive victory, the Comets improved to 10-3 overall and now sit 4-2 in ASC play as they wrapped up games against the league's West Division. UTD will not return to action until Thursday, Jan. 10, when they open ASC East play at home against East Texas Baptist. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.

Junior guard Dimitrius Underwood finished just one rebound shy of his conference-leading seventh 'double-double' of the season as he closed out the lop-sided victory with 26 points and nine rebounds, both game highs. Underwood was 10-for-16 from the field as he topped 20 points for the third straight contest and eighth time in 11 games this season. He has now climbed into sixth place on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,076 career points, passing two former Comets Brandon Greene (1,069) and Matthew Medell (1,060) on Monday.

Underwood scored the opening bucket of the game and the Comets quickly jumped out to an 18-4 lead over McMurry just over six minutes into the contest after a jumper by Hans Burwitz. The Comets led by as many as 40 points in the opening half, shooting better than 60 percent from the field as a team, before setting for a 60-25 lead at the break. Underwood scored 20 of his 26 points before halftime.

The Comets shot just 37.1 percent  from the floor in the second half with the starting five accounting for just 15 points over the final 20 points as the UTD reserves got ample playing time.

UTD finished the afternoon shooting 48.5 percent (33-for-68) from the field, connecting on 8-of-20 three-pointers (40%), while making 15-of-16 free throws (93.8%). The Comets out-rebounded McMurry, 42-34, and forced a season-best tying 19 turnovers.
