RICHARDSON, TX (04.22.18) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team closed out its third consecutive perfect run through the American Southwest Conference's West Division Sunday afternoon with an 8-1 home win over Hardin-Simmons.
The Comets (9-1, 6-0 ASC West) will ride an eight-match winning streak heading into the ASC Tournament, May 3-5, at the UTD Tennis Courts. UTD will open the event on Thursday, May 3, at 4:30 p.m. against LeTourneau, the No. 4 seed out of the ASC's East Division.
UTD picked up 2-of-3 doubles matches before dominating singles action with six victories. Albert Hernandez and
Ryan Morton picked up the first Comet win, downing HSU's Griffin Weinkam/Ben Gutierrez, 8-6, at No. 3, before
Ashwin Vaithianathan and
Eric Chen followed with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Holt Fields/Jordan Davis to give UTD a 2-0 lead. HSU won No. 2 doubles, 9-8.
Vaithianathan lifted the Comets to a 3-1 lead with a quick 6-0, 6-0, win over Keenan Nash at No. 4 and Hernandez handled Weinkham, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2.
Giovanni Zamboni collected the match-winning contest as he downed Fields, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
Mario Jelev (No. 1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4), Chen (No. 5, 2-6, 6-4, 10-1) and Morton (No. 6, 6-3, 6-3) also earned singles wins.
