Comets Fall in Season Opener to Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The UT Dallas women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a 68-44 loss at the University of Rochester in the Chuck Resler Tournament Friday night.

The host Yellow Jackets (1-0) built a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and 39-24 at the half. The Comets (0-1) outscored UR 14-12 in the final quarter.

For the game, UTD shot 21.4 percent from the field (15-of-70) and was 3-for-18 from three-point range and 11-of-16 at the free throw line. The Comets also recorded 43 rebounds, five assists, one block, 11 steals and 18 turnovers.

Rochester shot 36.4 overall (24-for-66), 6-for-27 outside and 14-of-21 at stripe to go with with 56 boards, 14 assists, 12 blocks, nine steals and 18 turnovers.

UT Dallas Notes
- The game was the first for head coach Joe Shotland at the helm of the Comets.
- Sophomore guard Cierra Trigg led UTD with a career-high 12 points and had three rebounds, a block and a steal.
- Junior center McKenzie Howard netted seven points with three boards.
- Junior guard Kaylee Boykin pulled down seven rebounds and scored five points.
- Jordan Maxwell and Diane Hurst had two steals each.

Rochester Notes
- Paige Gaynier led UR with 14 points and two steals.
- Katie Titus had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
- Callie McCulley recorded seven points, 10 boards and eight blocked shots.

Up Next
The Comets will face Johns Hopkins, who received votes in both top 25 polls, in the consolation game of the tournament at noon Saturday.
