RICHARDSON, TX (04.10.22) - The No. 29-ranked UT Dallas women's tennis team made a statement Sunday with a 5-4 home win over No. 13Â Trinity in non-conference play at the UTD Tennis Courts.
The Comets (8-2) took 2-of-3 doubles contests and rallied from behind for three late singles matches to earn the narrow victory in a dual of two of the top teams in the NCAA D-III West Region. UTD also notched its first-ever win over long-time regional foe Trinity.
UTD opened the match with a quick win at No. 3 doubles as
Megan Zeng and
Suzuka Nishino downed Trinity's Sam Miller/Ellie Hughes, 8-2. The Comets then added a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) win at No. 2 doubles as
Saumya Vedula and
Rebecca Jackson outlasted Tigers Ruth Hill/Olivia Kim.
Trinity (12-8) avoided the doubles sweep with a tie-break win at No. 1 where Megan Flores/Cate Cushing edged Comets
Samantha Wong and
Elyssa Ducret, 8-7 (7-2).
The Tigers used the momentum of their lone doubles win to earn the first two singles contests to grab a 3-2 lead over UTD. Trinity used wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to flip the advantage.
Nishino evened the match at No. 2 in the of two duels between regionally ranked singles players, downing Cushing, 6-1, 6-2. Nishino is currently ranked No. 10 in the West Region while Cushing is No. 14. Wong, the No. 6-ranked singles player in the region, followed with a 7-6, 7-0, win over Kim, ranked No. 8, to give the Comets back the lead, 4-3.
Jackson, the reigning ASC East Player of the Week, then secured the team victory with her 6-1, 6-4, win over Jenna Lee at No. 5. The Tigers collected a late straight-set win at No. 6 to close the match.
Trinity entered Sunday's match ranked third in the NCAA D-III West Region while the Comets were ranked No. 8.
The Comets return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 20, with an ASC East road match at Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark. UTD has already secured a fourth-straight ASC division title and will looking to claim the league's East Division crown outright with the win at Ozarks.
