UTD Opens Season with Close Loss to UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The UT Dallas women's basketball team opened the 2025-26 season with an 88-83 loss to UCCS at the Gallogly Event Center Friday afternoon.

The Comets stayed close to the Mountain Lions, who were receiving votes in the WBCA Top 25 poll, throughout the contest. With the UCCS leading 38-33 at halftime, UTD went on an 8-0 run to take a lead early in the third quarter. The teams would tie three times and exchange leads the rest of the third.

A three-pointer by graduate student guard Anna Yellen with 1:48 left made the game 83-82 in favor of the host. The Mountain Lions would go 5-for-6 at the free throw line the rest of the way, to secure the five-point victory.

The Comets shot 45.6 percent (26-for-57) from the field and were 9-of-23 from three-point range and 22-of-28 at the line. They also had 37 rebounds, 15 assists, 21 turnovers, five blocks and two steals.

UCCS shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) overall, 4-for-16 from outside and 24-of-35 at the free throw line to go with 31 boards, 15 assists, 13 turnovers, four blocks and five steals.

UT Dallas Performances
- Junior guard Umi Otsuka led all players with 26 points and six assists in her Comet debut.
- Anna Yellen went 6-of-8 from the line, en route to 22 points, while pulling down six rebounds. Her six three-pointers were a career-high and the most for a Comet since 2020.
- Self finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, a block and a pair of steals. She moved into a tie for ninth on the UTD career blocked shots list with 45.
- Sheridan Kavanagh posted 12 points and seven rebounds.
- Freshman Danielle Oyakhire pulled down eight boards with two blocks.

UCCS Performances
- Ayianna Johnson led the Mountain Lions with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
- Amyah Moore Allen had 19 points.
- Rylie Ottmann added 13 points and five assists.
- Brooklyn Hurtado scored 10 points off the bench.
