RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas women's basketball team set a new school record with 13 blocked shots in a 75-72 victory over Paul Quinn at the Activity Center Thursday night.
The Comets (3-3) led the Tigers (6-3) 15-14 after the first quarter and pushed the advantage to 28-18 over the first 3:13 of the second. PQC chipped away the rest of the half with UTD leading 38-35 at the break.
The home team led 50-40 midway through the third period before the Tigers went on a 13-3 run to tie it up at 53-53 going into the final quarter.
The fourth period saw eight ties and a pair of lead changes. Knotted at 68-68 with 2:28 to play, the Comets recorded a lay-up from
Addy Self and a three-pointer by
Sheridan Kavanagh to take control with a five-point lead. Paul Quinn made the score 73-72 after a Cierra Taylor basket with 43 seconds left. Self scored on a fast-break lay-up with six seconds left for the final 75-72 score. Aiyana Sams attempted a three-pointer at the buzzer, but the shot was blocked by Comet freshman
Kinley Mears.
UTD shot 38 percent (27-of-71) overall, 7-of-27 from three-point range and 14-of-18 from the free throw line with 44 rebounds, 21 assists, 18 turnovers and nine steals. The 13 blocked shots broke the old record of 11 set in January 2013.
The Tigers shot 31.3 percent (21-of-67) from the field, 6-of-18 from outside and 24-of-32 at the line with 49 rebounds, eight assists, 17 turnovers, two blocks and eight steals.
UT Dallas Performances
- Self led the Comets with her second double-double of the year. She had 17 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, three blocks and two steals. Self also moved into eighth on the UTD career list with 50 blocked shots.
- Graduate student guard
Anna Yellen hit a trio of three-pointers for 14 points to go with three blocks.

Umi Otsuka also posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards to go with seven assists, three blocks and two steals.
- Kavanagh finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
- Mears had 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.
Paul Quinn Performances
- Sams led all players with 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
- Cierra Taylor had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.
- Tamia Dolls added 13 points and eight boards.
- Zaire Brown had nine points and eight rebounds.
