RICHARDSON, TX (10.5.10) – The No. 22-ranked UT Dallas volleyball team jumped ahead early and then had to battle back for the win as the Comets downed regional rival Austin College in five games Tuesday night in a non-conference match. UTD edged the Roos, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 20-25, 15-10, at the UTD Activity Center.
Senior setter
Niki Calverley had her second 60-assist match of the season as she helped the Comets regain composure in the final set to avoid their second straight home loss. A native of Wylie, Calverley recorded a career-best 65 assists in the victory over ACU, topping her previous career high of 62 set at East Texas Baptist on Sept. 24.
The Comets (now 14-2) looked to be en route to an easy win as they grabbed the first two sets quickly against AC, a former Top 25 team. UTD hit .405 in the opening stanza, sparked by seven kills from senior
Amber Wetz, a native of San Antonio. The Comets committed just three errors as a team in that set to run away with the six-point win. The second set was much of the same for the Comets. While hitting at just .289 as a team in the game, UTD relied heavily on senior middle blocker
Jessica Nassau, who tallied six kills in the set and help spark the Comets to a 2-0 advantage.
In the third set, however, the Roos (now 16-4) made things interesting as they stepped up their offense. AC hit .357 in the third set and grabbed an early three-point lead, 10-7, to claw back into the match. The two teams traded blows in the set, exchanges side outs 12 straight serves at one point before the Roos ended the set on an ace.
AC continued its hot hand in the fourth set as the Roos took an early lead and never looked back as UTD had its worst offensive set of the night, hitting just .200 as a team. The Comets collected just 12 kills and made five errors as AC knotted the match, 2-2, thanks mostly to a 6-0 run midway through the set.
The Roos looked to be on their way to a five-game win as AC again grabbed an early lead and gained a 7-5 advantage on a kill by Shelby Eaves. But, an ensuing error by the Roos gave service to UTD and Calverley then served five straight points, getting three kills from sophomore
Dana Hilzendager, to give the momentum back to the Comets for good. The matched ended on back-to-back kills by Wetz.
Wetz led three Comets in double digits with 21 kills while adding a career-best 30 digs. Hilzendager had 17 kills and Nassau added 16 kills.
The Comets will now hit the road for an 11-match road swing as they visit No. 18-ranked Southwestern University Thursday night in Georgetown. The battled of the only two nationally ranked teams is set for 7 p.m.
