Ramped-Up Offense More Than Enough For UTD Pitchers In Weekend Sweep of Schreiner

UTD PUTS 35 RUNS ON THE BOARD, BUT ALSO GETS QUALITY STARTS DURING THREE WEEKEND WINS

KYLE GUEST HELPED LEAD A BARRAGE OF OFFENSE WITH A HOME RUN IN UTD'S 8-5 WIN OVER SCHREINER SATURDAY.
RICHARDSON, TX (02.27.10) – The UT Dallas baseball team got all the offense it needed (and then some!) this weekend, pounding out a three-game 11-1, 8-5 and 16-7 sweep of Schreiner University behind a 42-hit attack.

But, odd as it may sound, the story wasn't all about hitting.

UTD starting pitchers Marvin Prestridge and Jonathan Reeder each took no-hitters into the late portions of their shifts on the mound, and that was more than enough as hitters like Kyle Guest, Joseph Killgore and Larry Bolding took care of business at the plate.

Bolding led the way, going 7-for-10 for the weekend; but Guest and Killgore (who each were also 4-for-5 in mid-week game against Texas Wesleyan) combined for 11 more hits and 14 RBI, which included four doubles and two home runs.

Prestridge opened the series Saturday with five innings of no-hit ball before finishing off his seven-inning start with six strikeouts and just one run. Not to be outdone, Reeder gave up just three hits, but did not allow a run in seven innings of work Sunday. He started the game with 4.1 ininngs of no-hit ball before a pair of infield singles ruined his bid.

The three-game sweep bumped UTD (now 6-3) three games above the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Marvin Prestridge Action
UTD battered three Schreiner pitchers for 11 runs on 11 hits, but really overdid it on offense. Not only did the Mountaineer defense contribute six unearned runs to the Comet total off four errors, but UTD junior right-hander Marvin Prestridge could have easily managed with just a couple of runs.

Prestridge (2-0) took a no-hitter into the 5th inning of the seven-inning game, but the UTD defense opened the door by letting the first batter reach on a pop-up that fell unclaimed between three Comet fielders behind second base. By the time his seven-inning complete game was over, SU had eventually pushed across its only run with a three-hit inning in the 7th. Prestridge baffled the Mountaineers throughout, striking out six and allowing just five hits.

The Comets took the lead for good in the 1st inning on Killgore's solo home run over the left field wall, then took advantage of two SU errors and pushed four runs (3 of them unearned) across to make it 5-0 after three.

Drew Hallford's two-run double and a dropped fly ball by the Schreiner right fielder opened the door to a 5-run 6th.

GAME 2: UTD 8, SCHREINER 5 (boxscore)

The Comets finally were able to shake the Mountaineers from a 4-4 tie in the 6th inning by sending nine batters to the plate, and scoring three runs with 3 hits, 3 walks and 3 Schriener errors. The offensive outburst game UTD (you guessed it) a 3-run lead.

UTD took its first lead in the 3rd when Guest doubled home Jacob Starnes and Killgore. After Schreiner answered in the 4th with its own two-run shot, UTD went back out front with another 2-run inning in the 5th. Killgore led off the inning with a single, then Guest deposited a moon shot over the wall in right field.

Again, though, it wasn't good enough as Schreiner pieced together three hits in the 6th and tied the score again at 4-4. UTD answered quickly – loading up the bases on two hits and the first of what turned into three consecutive walks. The final two forced in runs for UTD. The Comets then added another run in the 8th on back-to-back doubles from Bolding and Matt Kelly – more than enough to overcome a last-gasp run from SU in the 9th.

Mason Thompson (
2-0) picked up the win for UTD with a 6-inning start, and Adam Spinn earned his second save of the year, though he surrendered his first earned run of the season in Schreiner's final at-bat.

Guest was 2-for-4 with 5 RBI.

GAME 3: UTD 16, SCHREINER 7

After 4.1 innings of no-hit ball Sunday, the first hit that Reeder surrendered really hurt - literally. Schreiner's Jose Garza shot a ball right back up the box that caromed off Reeder's leg for an infield hit. The next batter than lay down a perfect bunt that he beat out for another single and the no-hit bid was gone.

That was not a problem for the UTD offense, which had already reeled of six runs and would put 10 more on the board before Schreiner rallied late for six runs in the 9th against the UTD reserves. And, it could have been worse. After getting three unearned runs in a four-run 2nd inning off a pair of SU errors and 2-run hits from Killgore and Drew Hallford, UTD loaded up the bases with none out in the 3rd, but could not score after a force play at the plate and a double-play ball.

Not to matter, UTD added single runs in the 4th & 6th, sandwiching another four-run 5th inning when Hallford and Guest came up with big 2-RBI hits. UTD Coach Shane Shewmake started to substitute liberally as the Comets batted in the 7th and pinch-hitters had two RBI hits along with Starnes, who cleared the bases with a triple to right field.
