Record-Setting 41-1 Victory Just Part of Four-Game Tournament Sweep For Comets

COMETS ALREADY EQUAL 2009 WIN TOTAL AFTER FOUR WINS AT U.DALLAS TOURNAMENT

MALLORY MEYERS, ONE OF SEVERAL NEWCOMERS ON THE UTD SOFTBALL TEAM, MADE A DIFFERENT IN THE CIRCLE & AT THE PLATE.
IRVING, TX (02.28.10) – Last season, the UT Dallas softball team won just five games...all season long. This weekend, they equaled that number just one week into the 2010 season and rewrote the record book in the process.

On Saturday, the Comets (now 5-1) blanked Cornell College (IA) 3-0, then blasted their way into both the school and American Southwest Conference record book with an unbelievable 41-1 win over Rust College (MS). The 41 runs eclipsed a 32-run outburst by Concordia University just a year ago The team CTX set the record against? Rust College.

UTD made it a clean sweep Sunday by topping each of those teams for a second time, defeating Rust 19-0 and Cornell again, 5-3.

SATURDAY GAMES:

UTD 3, CORNELL 0 (Box score)

Sophomore hurler Mallory Meyers (2-0) amassed nine strikeouts en route to notching her second straight win in the circle, leading the Comets to a 3-0 win over Cornell in the opening game of the University of Dallas Tournament.

Meyers, who made her collegiate debut in an 8-5 win over Austin College on Tuesday, held the Rams hitless in three different innings. She was also 1 of 2 at the plate.

Freshman catcher Brooke Taft slapped a pair of run-scoring base hits—including an RBI double in the 6th inning—and was scored on a passed ball in the 4th. Taft was the only Comet to turn in a multi-hit outing, batting 3-for-3 with two singles.

UTD 41, RUST 1
(Box score)

The Comets rattled off 12 runs in the 1st inning, all while mustering just one hit. Rust pitcher Tia Grey, who pitched all five innings before the “run rule” ended the game early, walked six UTD batters and threw several wild pitches to score most of the runs. (Of the 41 runs tagged to Grey's name, 21 of them were unearned.)

UTD generated nine runs in the 2nd, 15 in the 3rd and five in the 5th. Four Comets—Adrienne Rathy, Natalie Duran and Caitlin Walsh—collected four hits apiece, while Taft, Krista Holder, Reachelle Speaker, Courtney Lievsay, and Caysie Norum all had two or more hits. The Comets poked 25 base-knocks throughout.

Norum (1-0) struck out six and allowed one run, albeit an unearned one, in her first stint in the circle this spring. She was 4-9 as a pitcher in 2009.

SUNDAY GAMES: (details to come)

UTD 19, RUST 0 (Box Score)

The rematch wasn't as bad as the original meeting, but was lop-sided just the same. UTD used 17 hits and took advantage of four Rust errors to take another five-inning "run rule" win.

Every player in the starting lineup and two late substitutions all got credited with at least one hit in the win, which went to Jeni Olbeter (2-1), who struck out three and allowed just one baserunner in a five-inning start.

The floodgates opened early as UTD opened the 1st inning with five straight hits and had five runs on the board by the end of the inning. The Comets continued the onslaught in the next three frames, scoring 14 runs while going through the batting order almost five times in four innings.

The Comets worked six walks and had just one strikeout while picking up six walks and two doubles on their way.

UTD 5, CORNELL 3
(Box Score)

The Comets overcame a sloppy start to rally for the win after an error, two hits and a steal of home put Cornell on top in the bottom of the 2nd, 3-0. Starter Meyers, who improved to 2-0 on the season, then settled down and gave up just four hits and keeping Cornell off the board the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, UTD reclaimed the lead for good in the top of the 3rd. A pair of walks and a hit batter loaded up the bases to open the inning, Caysie Norum drove home the first of four runs in the inning. An error on the Cornell first basemen allowed three runs to score and UTD did not have to look back.

The Comets got an insurance run in the 5th when Duran scored on a Norum hit.
