RICHARDSON, TX (03.19.10) – Injuries have riddled UT Dallas' pitching staff over the past few weeks, and on Friday, against the nationally ranked Choctaws, the Comets turned to underclassmen
Larry Bolding and
Cameron Brown for aid.
No. 12 Mississippi College saddled Bolding (0-1) with a 10-6 loss in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader, but Brown (2-0) picked up his second win of the season by guiding UTD to a 7-4 win in Game 2.
The Comets' impressive all-around outing in the second game obliterated the Choctaws' nine-game win streak, which dated back to March 6, and handed the Choctaws their first American Southwest Conference loss of the season. UTD (13-7, 3-2) was able to stay above .500 in ASC East Division action with the win.
The win also lifted UTD to its second win over a Top 25 squad in as many weeks. The Comets defeated Marietta College (OH), 2-1, on March 8.
The final game of the three-game series was cancelled after two days of rain and snow in the North Texas area. Division-leading UT-Tyler also lost one of its scheduled games over the weekend. The Comets and Patriots meet in a three-game series next weekend in Tyler.
MC 10, UTD 6 (Box score)
The Choctaws generated a four-run 5th inning to snap a 3-3 tie, and the Comets, scrambling to find their balance, were downed in a 10-6 final where MC totaled 13 hits throughout.
Bolding, a staple at second base for UTD, pitched 4 1/3 innings before getting the hook in favor of relievers
Andrew Noble and
Ryan Miner. He was able to notch two shutout innings against a high-octane MC offense that used Shane Bennet's three-run homer to gain separation room in the 5th.
With a 7-4 lead in the 6th, MC tacked on three more runs to all but cement the victory.
Shortstop
Jacob Starnes finished the game—which was only seven innings in length—by going 3-for-5 at the plate.
Drew Hallford sent a solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom of the 5th, plucking the first pitch he saw from MC's Tyler Seaman (6-0).
MC 4, UTD 7 (Box score)
The Comets took advantage of MC's early gaffes, compiling a 5-0 in a 1st inning where the Choctaws committed three, costly errors. UTD did, however, string together five runs in the frame.
And although the Comets' bats were relatively silent for the remainder of the afternoon, it was Brown's consistency on the mound that helped to bottle the victory. Brown was shelled for 10 hits, fanned just two MC batters, but gave up only two earned runs in six innings of work. Senior
Adam Spinn recorded his sixth save of the year by pitching the final three innings.
The Comets scored all of their runs in the opening three innings.
Clint Dunham splintered a two-RBI single in the 1st,
Joseph Killgore batted home a run-scoring single in the same inning and plated one more by doubling down the left-field line in the 2nd. Starnes singled home a run in the 3rd, where the Comets put MC in a 7-1 hole.
The Choctaws tallied one run in the 4th, 5th and 8th innings. MC's Craig Mackay (4-1) was yanked after just 1/3 inning—he allowed five runs to start the ballgame.
