GEORGETOWN, TX (03.31.10) – Joseph Killgore powered the Comets past Southwestern University on Wednesday, drilling a three-run homer in the 8th to secure a 12-9 win—UT Dallas' first in almost two weeks.
Recuperating from a futile weekend at UT-Tyler, the Comets prevailed in what proved to be another pendulum-like contest. There were four lead changes throughout, including a six-run swing in a 4th inning where
Drew Hallford rattled off his team-leading fifth home run of the season.
Killgore's blast was the one that mattered, though. His long ball broke a 9-9 tie in the 8th—just two innings after the Pirates stormed back from a four-run deficit. Shortstop
Jacob Starnes singled to start the frame, and
Jason Diemer walked prior to Killgore's late-game heroics.
A junior transfer from LeTourneau, Killgore has now totaled three home runs and 23 RBIs in his first season with the Comets.
Altogether, UTD recorded 16 hits by eight different players. Killgore and Starnes had three hits apiece, while Diemer, Hallford,
Kyle Guest and
Larry Bolding finished with two. Through 24 games, the Comets, as a team, are batting .354.
UTD's
Jonathan Reeder (2-4) earned his second win of the year on the mound. He logged four innings in relief of starter
Cameron Brown, who gave up five runs off eight SU hits. Reeder's numbers weren't much stronger—he allowed four runs himself—but did manage to register three shutout innings. Closer
Adam Spinn faced the minimum in the 9th, earning his seventh save this spring.
The win moved UTD (14-10, 3-5) to 3-7 in games played on the road. SU, members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), is currently in last place of the league's West Division. The victory also stretched UTD's win streak against the Pirates (11-18, 4-9) to five, dating back to the 2007 season. UTD is now 7-2 all-time against SU.
The Comets have a five-day layover until facing UTT (April 5) and McMurry (April 6) at home.
