RICHARDSON, TX (04.17.10) – Randy Lorber skied two, thunderous home runs on Saturday as UT Dallas closed the book on its second consecutive American Southwest Conference East Division sweep—this time over last-place East Texas Baptist University.
The Comets (22-11 overall) now own a seven-game win streak after dialing in 7-4, 8-2 and 7-3 wins over ETBU (11-24, 2-13) throughout the weekend, finishing the regular season with a 14-4 home mark.
Pitchers
Cameron Brown,
Larry Bolding and
Marvin Prestridge all polished their winning records in the series, but the Comets' offense splintered ETBU's pitching staff for 32 total hits and, as they've done so far in 2010, maintained a batting average of .355.
The victories positioned UTD solidly in third place in the East Division at 9-5, and clinched UTD's seventh appearance in the ASC post-season in the last eight seasons. UTD was fifth before it cleaned house at LeTourneau last week April 9-10) and entered this weekend hoping to gain ground on second-place Mississippi College, though the Choctaws tightened their hold on the East's No. 2 seed with pivotal wins over UT-Tyler in Clinton, MS.
The Comets' nearest rivals for the final two East Division spots are Louisiana College, which the Comets will face in a three-game series next weekend in Pineville, La.; and the University of the Ozarks (6-5), which could do no better than tie UTD in the standings, but would be left out due to a tiebreaker with UTD. So, the Comets can finish no worse than fourth, and will clinch the East Division's third seed with just one win in the three final games at LC.
The Comets will face off against regional opponent Austin College in Sherman, TX, on Tuesday, April 20 before their showdown with the Wildcats.

GAME 1: UTD 7, ETBU 4 (Box score)
UTD laced a series-best 14 hits, bolstered by Bolding's perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate.
Drew Hallford scattered three hits, Lorber and
Jason Diemer each rapped a pair of singles, and the Comets jumped out to an early 3-1 lead that they never surrendered.
A
Joseph Killgore base hit staked UTD to a 6-2 lead in the 5th inning, and even though ETBU would plate two runs at the top of the following frame,
Jacob Starnes knocked a sac fly in the 7th that awarded the Comets with a favorable cushion down the stretch.
Unbeaten in six starts, Brown (4-0) achieved his fourth win of the season, lasting five innings while giving up six hits.
Colton Wood and
Jonathan Reeder pitched in relief before
Adam Spinn notched his 10th win of the year by hurling a scoreless 9th.

GAME 2: UTD 8, ETBU 2 (Box score)
Lorber's solo home run in the bottom of the 1st electrified a Comets team that mounted a seven-run surge two innings later. Before the Tigers recorded their first hit of the game—it came in the 5th inning—UTD generated an insurmountable 8-0 lead.
ETBU's Tim George and Kyle Pope brought two runs home in the 6th, but even those aberrations took nothing away from Bolding's stellar performance on the hill. Bolding (3-2) pitched four hitless innings en route to earning his first complete-game win of 2010.
Lorber was the only Comet to turn in a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Starnes and catcher
Matt Kelly each chipped in with RBI singles in UTD's seven-run 3rd inning, which included a pair of ETBU infield gaffes.
GAME 3: UTD 7, ETBU 3 (Box score)
Prestridge (4-0) pitched 7 1/3 innings as the Comets' weekend culminated in a 7-3 win over the Tigers, who have now dropped 11 of their last 13.
But highlighting the series finale was Lorber's three-run blast—his second of the day, and his team-best sixth of the season—in the latter half of the 4th inning, which provided the Comets with a commanding 5-0 lead. He sent both homers soaring into a light, southern wind that blew in over the right field wall.
Lorber's three RBIs were a team-high, but Killgore, Starnes and Kelly were the only Comets to rip two hits apiece.
ETBU threatened late in the game, plating three runs in the 8th to put a three-run dent in UTD's 6-0 lead.
Aaron Rollins was scored on a Tiger error in the bottom of the inning, however, to give UTD enough insurance before Spinn pitched a 1-2-3 9th.
With the trio of wins, UTD is now 22-5 all-time against the Tigers, dating back to the Comets' inaugural 2002 season.
