OSHKOSH, WI (09.11.10)
– The University of Texas at Dallas volleyball team hadn't lost a regular season game since the 2008 season before running into 6th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Saturday at the Titans' annual Pizza Hut Classic.

UTD still won three out four matches at the tournament, but lost a close 25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 25-19, showdown with Oshkosh in the final match of pool play Saturday morning. The loss pushed the Comets (now 4-1) into the #2 seed match Saturday afternoon, where UTD prevailed 3-0 over Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 26-24, 25-13, 25-12.

The Comets started the tournament on Friday by winning their first two matches. UTD topped both Lake Forest College (IL), 3-0, with a 25-12, 26-24, 25-14 victory; then knocked off Elmhurst College (IL) in the nightcap by a 25-13, 25-14, 15-25 and 25-16 score. Elmhurst started off the tournament shocking the host Oshkosh team, 3-0.

In the opener against Lake Forest, Jessica Nassau, a senior from Orlando, Fla., and Dana Hilzendager, a sophomore from Red Oak, each recorded a team-best 10 kills while Cristin Herbort, a freshman from Fredericksburg, led UTD with 19 digs. Niki Caverley, a senior from Wylie, got the Comets going with 32 assists in the three-set match, averaging better than 10 assists per set.

Against Elmhurst, it was Amber Wetz who had the hot hand to lead the Comets to their third straight win to start the season. Wetz, a senior from San Antonio, collected 12 kills and added 21 digs and a pair of blocks to spark UTD to the four-set victory. Herbort again led the Comets with 24 digs while Nassau had five total blocks. Caverley had 30 assists in the win.

In Saturday's loss to Oshkosh, Kailey Killingsworth led three Comets in double-digit kills while Aubrey Bratcher matched a school record as UTD battled with the host Titans. Killingsworth, a freshman from Alvin, had 13 kills while hitting .306 and added 13 digs and four blocks. Hilzendager and Nassau each had 10 kills. Bratcher, a junior from Cypress, notched nine block assists, equaling the UTD single-match mark set by Krissy Seaman in 2007. Bratcher's nine total blocks against Oshkosh is tied for the second-highest total in Comet history. Danielle Porch, a freshman from Dripping Springs, led UTD with 22 digs while Caverley ended the match with 38 assists.

In Saturday's finale, Nassau sparked the Comets with a team-best 10 kills while Killingsworth added nine digs in the short three-set match. Hilzendager led UTD with 19 digs and Caverley had 27 assists.

Calverley and Wetz were both named to the All-Tournament Team after guiding the Comets to a 3-1 mark at the event. Calverley averaged 9.07 sets and 3.93 digs per game while Wetz hit at a .207 clip and averaged 2.57 kills per set.

Playing a tougher non-conference schedule in 2010 was part of Coach Marci Sanders' plan to try to get her Comets more battled tested and fine-tuned for a deeper run in the NCAA Division III post-season, where the team has been knocked out in the first round in each of the last two seasons.

The Comets return to action Saturday as they host both Mary Hardin-Baylor and the University of Dallas.
