No. 11 ETBU Too Much For Comets In Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MARSHALL, TX (03.25.13) - The UT Dallas softball team suffered its third and fourth straight losses to a nationally ranked opponent Monday afternoon as the Comets dropped both ends of an American Southwest Conference East Division doubleheader at No. 11-ranked East Texas Baptist. UTD fell in the opener, 11-6, before being shutout by the Tigers, 5-0, in the night cap.

The Comets (now 11-8-1, 2-4 ASC East) will look to return to winning ways later this week as they host the University of the Ozarks for a four-game home series. The two teams will play a 2 p.m. doubleheader Thursday before a 12 p.m. twinbill Friday at the UTD Softball Field.

GAME 1 - ETBU 11, UTD 6
Avery McHugh and Morgan Anderson each had home runs as the Comets (now 11-7-1, 2-3 ASC East) collected 11 hits, but UTD could not overcome three errors in the first game of the divisional twin bill.

The Comets opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the 1st on McHugh's fourth long ball of the season, however ETBU responded with three runs on five singles in the bottom of the frame to grab a 3-2 lead. Trailing 4-2 heading to the 3th, UTD drew back within a run, 4-3, after a Tiger error and Anderson's first homer of the year came with two outs in the 4th to knot the game, 4-4.

ETBU (now 18-3, 6-1 ASC East) then exploded for five runs on just two hits in the bottom of the 4th to pull ahead, 9-4, and never looked back. The host Tigers tacked on two more runs in the 5th before UTD scored two final runs in the top of the 7th on an error and a Megan Aragones single.

Jeni Olbeter (6-5) was handed the loss after giving up nine runs, five of which were earned, on 11 hits. Olbeter did not record a strikeout and gave up two walks, hit one batter and had two wild pitches. McHugh finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead four Comets with a multi-hit game.

GAME 2 - ETBU 5, UTD 0
After three scoreless frames, the East Texas Baptist plated three runs in the 4th before adding a single run in the 5th and 6th innings to complete the sweep of the Comets with a 5-0 shutout.

Megan Aragones (1-2) gave up just one hit through three innings before the Tigers got to her in the 4th frame. ETBU loaded the bases without an out with a single, error and a fielder's choice but got an unassisted double play by first baseman Jonelle Feikis on a line drive by Logan Gardner. However, the Tigers followed up with a double by Maranda Westbrook and a triple by Alyssa Romero to take control of the game.

Aragones finished the game, giving up two earned runs on eight hits with a strikeout. The Comets managed just four hits in the game with Stephanie Harris going 2-for-3.
