Byron Cole and
Jean-Jean Gwo have been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week, respectively, announced by the league office Thursday afternoon.
Cole, a native of San Diego, Calif., becomes the second UTD men's player to be honored by the league this season after posting a 2-0 record in both singles and doubles to fuel a two-win week for the Comets. The UTD men (now 9-1, 3-0 ASC East) opened the week with an 8-1 win over Salisbury and then downed LeTourneau, 6-3, in a return to divisional play. Cole picked up two wins at No. 3 singles and teamed up with
Bryan Leib for two doubles wins.
Gwo, a native of Plano, gives the Comet women the award for the second straight week and the third time this spring. She was 2-0 in singles play as helped UTD improve to 10-2 on the season and 4-0 in ASC East play. Gwo claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles as the Comets blanked LeTourneau, 9-0, and added a win at No. 2 doubles with teammate
Auvi Tran.
The Comet men and women return to the courts Friday for a 3 p.m. match at rival Texas-Tyler.
