Box Score 2 SHERMAN, TX (04.17.13) - The UT Dallas softball team played its final non-conference games of the season Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep at Austin College. The Comets opened the twin bill with an 8-0, five-inning win while finishing the sweep with an 11-6 victory.
The Comets (now 22-13-1) conclude the regular season this weekend with a four-game series at Louisiana College in American Southwest Conference East Division play. The two teams will play a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday before wrapping up the series with a 12 p.m. twin bill Saturday. With two wins over the Lady Cats, UTD can secure the No. 3 seed out of the ASC East at the conference tournament, Apr. 25-27.
GAME 1 - UTD 8, Austin College 0 (5 inn.)
Sophomore
Avery McHugh recorded the fifth multi-home run game in program history, going 3-for-3 with two long balls and three RBI in the 8-0 win to open the doubleheader. McHugh hit a two-run shot in the 1st and added a solo homer in the 3rd to bring her season tally to eight.
Leading 3-0 in the 3rd, the Comets extended their lead with a two-run single by
Megan Aragones, scoring
Rachel Riley and
Hannah Creech. UTD added a sixth run in the 4th frame on a double by
Brittanie Knowles before completing the run-rule victory with two finals runs in the 5th. Aragones picked up her third RBI of the game with a fielder's choice for the first run in the 5th and
Chelsea Sartor plated the Comets' final run later in the frame.
Aragones (6-5) picked up the win, scattering two hits in 4.0 innings. She struck out three and walked two.
Micah Starkey tossed the final inning, giving up a hit with a strikeout. Riley joined McHugh going 3-for-3 while Sartor finished 2-for-2.
GAME 2 - UTD 11, Austin College 6
The Comets used home runs by Creech and
Stephanie Harris as they rallied from a 2-0 early deficit to complete the sweep with an 11-3 routing of the Lady Roos.
UTD erased the 2-0 first inning hole with a two-run blast by Creech with no outs in the top of the 2nd. The Comets then scored three runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th to pull away from host Austin College.
In the 3rd, the Comets got back-to-back doubles by McHugh and Riley to account for the three runs in the frame. UTD added three runs in the 4th on a Lady Roo error and a two-run homer by Harris. In the 5th, the Comets secured an 11-3 lead thanks to an RBI single by Bratcher and a two-run double by Harris.
The Lady Roos answered with three runs in the bottom of the 5th to avoid the second straight run-ruled shortened contest. AC look to add to its rally in the 6th, but a running catch by Sartor in foul territory ended a bases-loaded threat by the Lady Roos.
Jessie Richardson (3-1) collected the victory, giving up six earned runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings in the circle. Starkey again completed the game, tossing two scoreless frames and giving up two hits and a walk. Harris finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Riley was 2-for-2.
