Netters Split With Nationally Ranked Opponents First Day At CLU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 THOUSAND OAKS, CA (09.06.13) - The UT Dallas volleyball team split with a pair of nationally ranked opponents Friday afternoon as the Comets opened the Cal Lu Fornia Tournament, hosted by California Lutheran University.

The Comets (now 2-4) opened the event with a stunning four-game win over No. 18-ranked Chapman (28-26, 19-25, 25-15, 26-24), but closed the opening day with a three-set loss to No. 10-ranked CLU (25-22, 25-19, 25-12).

UTD closes the event Saturday with matches against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 1:30 p.m. and LaVerne at 6 p.m. LaVerne is receiving votes in the latest AVCA/NCAA DIII Top 25.

UTD 3, Chapman 1 (28-26, 19-25, 25-15, 26-24)
After a rough opening weekend to the season, the Comets kicked off their California trip in the right way with a four-game win over the No. 18-ranked Panthers.

Sophomore Abbie Barth led UTD with 17 kills along with an impressive .516 hitting percentage to spark the Comets to their second straight win. Barth committed just one error in 31 swings and added 12 digs, two aces and a block. Meredith Crawford added 14 kills while Taylour Toso finished the match with 13 kills. Sophomore setter Kayla Jordan collected 35 assists in the four sets while Blake Johnson had 13 assists. Crawford led UTD with 18 digs.

The Comets hit a season-high .333 for the match, including a .393 clip (14-3-28) in the third set.

California Lutheran 3, UTD 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-12)
The Comets cooled off after their opening win as they hit just .112 as a team in a three-set defeat by the No. 10-ranked Regals.

UTD managed just 22 kills as a team over the three sets with Toso leading the bunch with seven. Toso added three blocks, a pair of digs and an ace. Barth finished with five kills while Crawford had four kills. Jordan had just seven assists in the loss.
