Comets Dispatch Sul Ross State, 3-0, To Remain Unbeaten in ASC

Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.20.14) - The UT Dallas volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep over Sul Ross State on its home court Saturday afternoon, topping the Lady Lobos, 25-8, 25-9, 25-21.

UTD (10-2 overall) claimed its seventh straight victory, improving to 4-0 in ASC play. SRSU dropped to 4-10 on the season and is still looking for its first conference victory at 0-5.

The Comets almost doubled up the Lady Lobos in kills on the offensive end (34-18) dominating the net defensively with a 12-3 blocking advantage. UTD hit .237 (34 kills, 11 errors) as a team while holding SRSU to a minus-.042 mark (18 kills, 22 errors). The Comets added 11 service aces to the final tally.

Sophomore Holyn Handley, who won ASC Player of the Week notice last wee, put in another solid performance. The second-year player from Colleyville nailed down 10 kills while hitting .360. She added an ace, 3 blocks and nine digs.

Senior Taylor Toso picked up nine kills, three digs and 2 block assists. Sophomore Michelle Toro led the squad with five block assists. Junior Meredith Crawford had six kills and an ace.

The Comets made easy work of the Lady Lobos in the first two sets. SRSU last stayed even with UTD at 4-4 in the first set before the Comets finished off the 25-8 rout on a 21-4 run. In the second set, UTD continued its dominance, jumping ahead 11-2 to open the set, and finished it off with a 14-7 run for the 25-9 win.

In the final set, UTD Coach Marci Sanders brought in a number of reserve players and the Lady Lobos took advantage with a late surge. Despite having their best hitting game (.314), the Comets let a 9-2 start dwindle away as SRSU tied the game up at 16-16. With the score 17-17, freshman Ashley Levy led a 3-0 run with a pair of service aces. The Lady Lobos later got to within 21-20, but another 3-0 run that included two Toso kills gave the Comets a 24-20 edge. Toso then finished the match with her ninth kill.

UTD takes its perfect ASC record on the road next weekend with a Friday night meeting against Concordia, and a Saturday afternoon showdown with ASC favorite Mary Hardin-Baylor.
