Comets Land Seven on All-ASC Teams, Sweep Divisional Awards

RICHARDSON, TX (05.03.18) - Seven members of the UT Dallas women's tennis team were recognized on Thursday as the American Southwest Conference released its all-division and all-conference teams for the sport.

Sophomore Kathy Joseph was tabbed the ASC West Division Most Valuable Player, a slew of Comets among divisional award winners. Svaksha Iyengar was named the division's Freshman of the Year while sophomore Sindhu Ravula was honored as the ASC West Newcomer of the Year. Junior Sophie Farmer was one of three players to share the West's Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. award. In addition Comet head coach Bryan Whitt was named the ASC West Coach of the Year, earning his second women's divisional award during his career.

Sumvruta Iyengar was named first team All-ASC West and All-ASC at No. 1 singles while Joseph earned both honors for No. 2 singles. Svaksha Iyengar claimed both honors at No. 5 singles and junior Elzabeth Labra claimed both honors at No. 6 singles. Joseph and Ravula claimed first team All-ASC West and All-ASC recognition at No. 1 doubles, Farmer and Labra earned both honors at No. 2 doubles and Svaksha Iyengar and Vivian Sepulveda earned both honors at No. 3 doubles.

A native of Prosper, Sumvruta Iyengar was 9-5 in singles during the season, going 6-0 in ASC West play.

Joseph, a native of Williston, Vt., was 15-1 in singles, going 6-0 in divisional play, and was 11-2 with Ravula, a native of Allen, in doubles, 5-0 against ASC West competition.

Svaksha Iyengar, the younger sister of Sumvruta, went 11-3 in singles this spring, 6-0 in ASC West, and was 9-2 with Houston-native Sepulveda in doubles.

A native of Frirendswood, Labra was 10-4 in singles, 5-0 in ASC West, this spring and was 8-5 with Farmer, a native of Eden Prairie, Minn., in doubles.

The Comets posted a 12-4 overall record this spring, going 6-0 in ASC West to claim the squad's first-ever West title and second-ever division title in program history. UTD won the ASC East title in 2013. The Comets advanced to the finals of the ASC Tournament, before falling in the finals to Texas-Tyler, 5-4.
