Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.19.09) – The UT Dallas women's soccer team got some much-needed relief to its early offensive woes Saturday afternoon, knocking home a pair of breakaway goals and shutting down the University of the Ozarks defensively on their way to a 2-0 victory, their first win of the season.
The victory - and the goals - could not have come at a more opportune time for the Comets (1-3-2 overall), who had only scored just one goal in their previous five games, but (more importantly) were playing their American Southwest Conference opener. UTD is now 1-0-0 in the games that count while Ozarks fell to 1-6-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the ASC.
UTD dominated the match, outshooting Ozarks 35-1, but did not get a shot past Ozarks goalkeeper Lori Langman until
Katie Makanani broke free from the Lady Eagle defense and knocked home a shot 17:21 into the game. Sophomore
Leah Bowyer, making just a short appearance while continuing to recover from an injury, got the Comets' second goal with just 13 minutes remaining on a similar play after
Whitney Schmidt slipped a pass to her in front of the Ozarks net.
The Comets kept Langman busy all afternoon, putting 12 shots on goal and taking 11 corner kicks. The Lady Eagles managed just one shot on a free kick off a UTD foul, but the shot hit the crossbar and made for a pretty uneventful afternoon for UTD goalkeeper
Andrea Jones.
UTD returns to ASC action next weekend with a road trip to Louisiana College and Mississippi College.
