Comets Dispatched By No. 2 East Texas Baptist Univ. in Pair of One-Sided Losses

COURTNEY KUEBLER'S HEROICS WEREN'T ENOUGH TO GUIDE UTD TO ITS SECOND UPSET IN FOUR DAYS

COURTNEY KUEBLER (CENTER) IS WELCOMED HOME AFTER HITTING THE FIRST OF HER TWO HOMERUNS TUESDAY NIGHT.
RICHARDSON, TX (04.13.10) – Courtney Kuebler cocked her arms, released a strong, crisp swing, and watched her second home run of the day drift over the left field wall.

So, too, drifted the hopes of UT Dallas, though, as No. 2 East Texas Baptist broke a 4-4 tie by unloading seven runs—all in the very next inning—of Game 2 on Tuesday. It was that 7th inning meltdown, laced with four infield gaffes, that brought an end to a day where the Comets dropped 9-1 and 11-4 decisions to the Lady Tigers.

UTD (14-18, 3-13) committed 10 errors throughout the afternoon, adding to the seven misplays the team was charged with when both squads first met back on March 27. Thus, the Comets, who have only Mississippi College and the Ozarks left on their East Division tab, finished the year with an 0-4 mark against ETBU (28-4, 15-3).

Kuebler was a combined 2-for-5 from the plate on Tuesday, with both hits leaving the park—one in each game. Her second home run qualified as a two-run shot that tied Game 2 at 4-4 heading into the final inning of play.

Yet the Comets failed to stave off ETBU's 7th inning rally, which included five hits to go along with UTD's four errors. By the end of Game 2, in fact, UTD had committed seven errors, which tied an all-time program worst.

UTD has now dropped 15 of its last 17 games, including its previous eight against ETBU. The Comets will now face another ranked opponent in MC, the No. 14 team in the country, in a pair of doubleheaders in Clinton, MS, on April 16 and 17.

GAME 1: ETBU 9, UTD 1 (Boxscore)

That unholy outcome, 9-1, ended Game 1 after just five innings of action. Five days after suffering not one, but two 9-1 defeats at the hands of LeTourneau, the Comets totaled only two hits against ETBU ace Ayrika Henderson (14-2).

Kuebler was the lone bright spot for UTD, belting a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd. Natalie Duran protected her .484 batting average by rapping one single.

Jeni Olbeter (5-9) took the loss on the mound for the Comets. She allowed a three-run blast, compliments of ETBU's Rebecca Young, in the 1st inning while recording one shutout frame in the 2nd.

ETBU needed one run in the 5th—an RBI single from Adrienne Meier—to secure a “run rule” victory.

GAME 2: ETBU 11, UTD 4 (Boxscore)

Courtney Kuebler Action
Kuebler's two-run homer in the bottom of the 6th resuscitated the Comets and knotted the score at 4-4. But the Lady Tigers responded instantly, punching out a five-hit, seven-run 7th that was aided by four infield errors.

It was the second time in four days that UTD rattled the confidence of one of the nation's powerhouses. On Saturday, the Comets capitalized by upsetting No. 1 Louisiana College 7-5 at the UTD Softball Field.

No such magic was in store for either of Tuesday's contests. ETBU's Alicia Wright (12-1) retired three straight Comets to seal Game 2, and the Lady Tigers, who remain one game behind LC for the East Division lead, improved their American Southwest Conference record to 15-3.

Mallory Meyers (7-8) dipped below .500 on the mound for the first time all season, while Wright, her counterpart, turned in a noteworthy performance on offense, too. Wright thrashed UTD for two home runs and four RBIs, and finished 2-for-4 in the batter's box.

UTD managed just six hits throughout, including base-knocks from Adrienne Rathy, Hailey Starkey and Anna Knutson.
