RICHARDSON, TX (02.17.11) - The UT Dallas baseball team scored in each of the first four innings to easily cruise to an 14-1 win over Arlington Baptist College in the Comets' 2011 home opener.
Junior
Kyle Guest got the scoring started with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning as he took a full-count pitch over the leftfield wall to boost the Comets to an early 4-0 lead. Junior
Jacob Starnes led off the frame with a single and junior
Chase Brown followed two batters later with another single and sophomore
Jake Wyand then drew four-pitch walk to load the bases for Guest's first long ball of the season.
UTD added two more runs in the second frame to extend its lead to 6-0. After a single by freshman
Elisha Settoon and a double by senior
Garet Norton to open the inning, Starnes would bring home Settoon with a fielders' choice to third base. Starnes later scored on a fielders' choice ground out by Wyand to complete the Comets' scoring in the second.
UTD then tacked on a run each in the third and fourth innings. The Comets scored in the third when junior
Larry Bolding doubled to leftfield and then scored on a single by Norton. In the fourth, Brown opened the frame with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch by ABC pitcher Gregg Pevsner.
The Patriots got on the board with an unearned run in the top of the sixth when Chris Wood scored from third base on a groundout by Travis Laird.
The Comets got offensive again in the seventh, plating three more runs to grab a double-digit lead. Senior
Grant Friddell started the scoring as he scored from third on another wild pitch by Pevsner. Norton then added a two-run single up the middle, scoring Guest and Settoon.
Sophomore right-hander
Derek Dallas (1-0) got off to an impressive start as he retired the first eight batters he faced, five of which were via strikeout. Dallas tossed 8.0 innings, giving up one unearned run on just four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Freshman
Calvin Campbell tossed the final frame, retiring the three batters he faced with two strikeouts.
UTD added three final runs in the eighth inning to complete the scoring. The first run came without a hit as the first three batters of the frame reached on a walk or was hit by pitch. Diemer then came home after a Patriot error on a ground ball to third base. The Comets plated two more runs on a pinch-hit single by Matt Olshewski, scoring Wyand and senior
Clint Dunham.
Guest ended the game 3-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored while Norton went 3-for-4. Settoon was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Comets return to the field next Wednesday when the host Bates (ME) in a non-conference contest. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the UTD Baseball Field.
