UTD Women Continue Torrid Start, Bounce Reigning ASC Champ Concordia

Box Score AUSTIN, TX (12.20.12) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team boast the top scoring defense in the American Southwest Conference and the Comets showed off their defensive muscle Thursday afternoon with a 61-55 road win over reigning ASC champion Concordia-Texas.

The Comets (now 8-1, 6-0 ASC) held an opponent under 60 points for the sixth time this season and used stingy defense in the second half, holding host Concordia to just 26 points after the break, remain perfect in conference play.

Tied 29-29 at the break, UTD shot better than 52 percent from the field in the second half to quiet a Tornado squad that opened the contest with a hot start. Concordia also opened the second half hot, scoring the first five points of the period, but the Comets answered quickly, using a three-pointer by Davis and an old-fashioned three-point play by Kilgore to ignite a 13-0 run over a six-minute as the Comets grabbed a 42-34 lead with 14:37 to play.

The Comets opened their largest lead of the second half with just under 12 minutes left when Amber Brown nailed a pair of free throws to lift UTD to a 44-35 advantage. Concordia clawed back, however, using a 6-0 run to draw within three points, 44-41, with 10:36 to play after a Madi Hess jumper. But, the Comets never relinquished the lead, holding off the Tornados over the final 10 minutes of play, limiting CTX to just six field goals after Hess' jumper.

Concordia (now 4-5, 2-3 ASC) opened the game hot and quickly grabbed a six-point lead, 18-12, after a three-point play by Hess with 13:08 before the half. The Tornados led by as many as seven points in the half before UTD finished the frame on a 13-6 run, including a pair of three-pointers by Davis. Davis' second long ball down the stretch came with 20 seconds left before half to lift the Comets 29-27 lead before Concordia's Kaleigh Landry hit a pair of free throws with two seconds left to knot the game.

UTD finished the game 20-of-46 (43.5%) from the field for the game, hitting 4-of-12 three-pointers (33.3%), and shot 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the foul line. Davis was 5-of-8 from the floor, making 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Korioth was 7-for-14 from the floor and added seven rebounds, four steals and two assists - all team highs.

For Concordia, Domonique Liddell led the Tornados with 13 points while teammate Brianna Smith added 11 points. Liddell led the game with nine rebounds and three blocked shots. The Tornados shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field, connecting on 6-of-15 three-pointers (40%), and shot 83.3 percent (5-of-6) form the charity stripe.

The Comets now take a short break for the holidays before returning home to face Agnes Scott College on Saturday, Dec. 29. Game time is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
