Box Score PINEVILLE, LA (02.25.12) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team's dream of reaching its first American Southwest Conference championship game came to a screeching halt Saturday afternoon as Concordia University took control of a semifinal matchup early and cruised to a 61-46 win over the Comets at H.O. West Fieldhouse on the Louisiana College campus.
Concordia will play the host Lady Wildcats in the title game of the tournament Sunday afternoon.
UTD, which finished its season with a 20-7 record, fell in a deep hole early against the Tornados (22-4) and could not dig their way out. The Comets trailed 34-16 at halftime, but were only able to shave three points off the lead despite a stronger showing in the second half of the game.
It marked the second straight year that UTD had fallen in the semifinals of the ASC Championship Tournament.
UTD actually got off to a hot start, taking an 8-2 lead in the first 6:17 of the game after three pointers from senior
Lyndsey Smith and freshman
Jo'Anna Davis. But the Tornados finally got on track and tied the score two minutes later and then finished rattling off a devastating 26-3 run that spelled doom for the Comets. CTX was up 28-11 before the Comets were able to score again.
By the halftime break, UTD had given up 24 points off 23 turnovers and were losing the battle inside. CTX scored 22 of its 34 first-half points in the paint. UTD's 6-of-18 first-half shooting wasn't enough to get the Comets back in the game.
The Comets opened the second period knocking four points off the lead to get to 34-20 at 18:02, but the Tornados answered quickly with eight unanswered points to build the cushion back up to 22 points (42-20) at 15:58. Once CTX took a 47-27 lead with 11:21 remaining, the Comets couldn't get any closer than 20 points until the final minutes of the game.
The Tornados led by 26 (61-35) with just 4:10 left on the clock. UTD was able to score the final 11 points of the game to trim the margin down to a respectable 15-point loss.
UTD did finish the game with five 3-point baskets, including three from Smith, who led the Comets with 17 points in her final game in a UTD uniform. She also picked up 13 rebounds to record her fifth straight double-double. Davis was the only other Comet in double figures with 10 points.
Concordia got double-figure scoring efforts from Paige Parrish (16), Termeka Canada (10) and Brianna Smith (10).
