Box Score RICHARDSON, TEXAS (11.02.13) - The UT Dallas women's soccer team finished off its regular season Saturday with a 5-0 whitewash of the University of the Ozarks, claiming the No. 2 seed in the American Southwest Conference.
With the second-place finish, the Comets earned the right to host the ASC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2002. Hardin-Simmons University finished first in both the men's and women's standings after the regular season, and ASC by-laws designate that the tournament goes to the No. 2 seed in the women's bracket in odd-numbered years when that happens.
The tournament will be held at the UTD Soccer Complex next Thursday, Friday and Sunday, Nov. 7-8 & 10. The tournament winner earns the ASC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
The Comets wasted little time assuring themselves of the second-place finish, scoring five times in the first half of the Saturday match with Ozarks. Anything other than a win for UTD would have knocked them down to third place in the final standings.
UTD junior
Sarah Borg scored twice in the game's first 8:39, running her season total to nine goals. She has scored four times in the past four games, including the game-winner in three of those matches.
Borg put the Comets on the board just 6:38 into the game, taking a pass from
Gisselle Miller and chipping a shot over the head of Ozarks goalkeeper Mary Eoff. Just over two minutes later (8:39), it was Borg again taking a deep pass from
Carli Beckett and firing another shot into the Ozarks net.
The Comets quickly made it 3-0 when senior Eboni Udenzi, one of five UTD seniors honored before the game, punched in a shot off a Beckett corner kick. With the UTD bench emptying to finish out the half,
Jeri Mills got on the scoreboard in the 35th minute off a cross from
Juli Saba.
Alissa Burch finished up the scoring off another corner kick scramble in the 41st minute.
Jenna Gill was credited with the assist on the play.
The Comets completely dominated the game offensively, building a gaudy 43-0 shot advantage. Eoff was forced into 15 save situations in addition to the five goals she and the Eagle defense allowed. Beckett led the Comets with nine shots, including five on net.
There was no other scoring after halftime, though UTD had 17 shots and Eoff made seven saves. Comet goalkeepers
Brittany Best and
Macaire Ament split time in the net for UTD, but did not have to make a save.
