Comets Run Away With 78-62 Non-Conference Win At Trinity

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TX (11.21.13) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team moved to 2-0 Thursday night as the Comets cruised to a 78-62 win over previously-unbeaten Trinity University in non-conference play.

With the game tied, 17-17, with just over seven minutes left in the opening half, the Comets used a 19-9 run to finish the period and never looked back. UTD's momentum would continue into the second half, outscoring the Tigers, 22-12, over the first 8:13 of the period to extend its lead to 20 points. The Comets shot nearly 48 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes, forcing 11 second-half turnovers.

Juniors Amber Brown and Christina Brosnahan led the Comets with 16 points each while Madi Hess added 11 points and Morgan Kilgore finished with 10 points.  Brown also led UTD in rebounding with seven boards and Hess had a team-best five assists.

Neither team got off to a hot start, but it was the host Tigers (now 3-1) who grabbed early control of the contest. The Comets scored the opening points of the game, but soon found themselves trailing Trinity, 11-5, with 16:08 to play in the first half. UTD finally regained the lead with 10:01 remaining before the break on a Kimmie Grimes three-pointer, giving the Comets a 15-13 advantage. That bucket sparked a 7-0 run by UTD and the Comets would not trail again. UTD led by as many as 12 points in the half before taking a 36-26 lead at intermission.

The Comets finished the game 26-of-56 (46.4%) from the field, connecting on 9-of-20 three-pointers (45%), and shot 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the foul line. UTD out-rebounded the Tigers, 41-34.

Trinity finished the night shooting just 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the field, making just 7-of-26 three-pointers (26.9%), and shooting 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the free-throw line.

Next up for the Comets is the start of American Southwest Conference play as UTD visits Howard Payne Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. in Brownwood.
