Box Score 2 RICHARDSON, TX (11.08.13) - After keeping its American Southwest Conference championship hopes alive Friday afternoon with a three-set sweep of Concordia Texas, the UT Dallas volleyball was eliminated from the ASC Tournament with a 3-1 loss to East Texas Baptist Friday night.
UTD (30-8) manhandled Concordia earlier in the day, 25-20, 25-15, 25-10; but could not keep the momentum going in the evening elimination match with the Tigers, falling 25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-13. The top-seeded Comets will now have to sit by while the No. 2, 3 & 4 seeds - Mary Hardin-Baylor, East Texas Baptist and Hardin-Simmons - decide the 2013 championship starting at 12 noon Saturday. HSU advanced to the 3 pm championship match earlier in the evening with a three-game sweep of UMHB. ETBU & UMHB will play the final elimination game at 12 noon.
UTD will hope its regional ranking might be enough to advance into the NCAA National Division III playoffs, but will not learn that fate until Monday.
UTD def. CONCORDIA, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-10)
The Comets opened the day with a three-game sweep of Concordia.
Abbie Barth had a match-high 14 kills while
Meredith Crawford added 10 kills as the Comets hit .291 as a team. UTD collected nine blocks in the match, getting six from
Blake Johnson while
Kayla Jordan finished the short match with 28 assists (9.3 per set).
The Tornados hung close in the opening set and were down just 15-13 midway through.CTX closed the gap, though, tying the score at 17-17 before UTD went on a 4-0 run to open up the lead late and hang on for the 25-20 win.
UTD raced out to an early lead in the second set, but again CTX came back to close within three points at 12-9. A series of attack errors, though, allowed UTD to stretch out its lead to 19-11 before finishing on a 6-4 run for the 25-15 win.
Things didn't stay close for long in the final set - a dominating 25-11 win by UTD. The Comets broke away from a 5-5 tie with a 10-1 run to go up 15-6, again sparked by Tornado attack errors. Barth and Johnson both added a pair of late kills as the Comets outscored CTX down the stretch 10-5.
ETBU def. UTD, 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 25-13)
For the second time in the tournament, the Comets fell victim to a team they had defeated twice during the regular season as East Texas Baptist dominated in a 3-1 win. The Tigers pummeled the Comets with a 72-47 kill advantage, outhitting UTD, .282-.195. The Comets simply could not muster any kind of prolonged momentum and eventually were overrun by a precision ETBU offensive attack.
Barth and Crawford topped UTD with 12 kills apiece while Toso was held to just 10 in the four-set match. No one else had more than five as UTD hit just .195 as a team on 159 attempts.
ETBU jumped on the Comets right out of the gate, building an early lead. UTD did battle from an 11-6 deficit to make it a one-point game at 12-11, but the Tigers pulled away with a 13-6 run to take a 25-17 win in the first set. ETBU scored 21 of its 25 points on kills.
UTD battled in the second set, keeping the game tight up until the score was tied at 22-22 late. But that was as close as the Comets could get as ETBU picked up two more kils and a block to finish off the 25-22 win.
The Comets did rebound in the third set, pulling away from a 16-16 tie midway through. UTD scored four straight points to go up 20-16 on a Barth kill, then benefited from a controversial line call that gave them a 23-19 lead. UTD got the final two points and were back in the match, down just 2-1.
But the momentum faded quickly in a disappointing fourth set. ETBU scored the first five points and were up 9-2 when UTD got is first point off a kill. But three more ETBU points scored before Johnson could score again the Comets were in a deep hole at 12-4. UT was never able to get closer than six points (12-18) the rest of the way and fell 25-13.
