Box Score ALPINE, TX (12.20.13) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team bounced back from its first loss of the season last week, racing away from an overmatched Sul Ross State team in a 97-65 American Southwest Conference win.
The Comets (6-1, 3-1 ASC) used an early 19-0 run to start pulling away from the Lady Lobos (1-8, 0-6), building a lead in the second half that got has high as 40 points.
Morgan Kilgore led the way for UTD, topping all scorers with 24 points, including 14 first-half points as the Comets built a 49-26 advantage at the break. Three others finished in double figures, including
Christina Brosnahan, who scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half.
Jo'Anna Davis had 11 points while
Amber Brown scored 10.
Madi Hess and
Kimmie Grimes each had eight rebounds as the Comets dominated the boards, 54-32. Brosnahan followed with seven rebounds while
Jaylon McClure came off the bench to tally seven boards.
The game might have been even more one-sided had the Lady Lobos not connected on 10-of-24 three-point shots. UTD finished 5-of-16 from beyond the arch, nailing four long-range shots after halftime.
UTD stopped the Lady Lobos defensively, holding SRSU to just 36.7 percent shooting (22-of-66 shots) while hitting 33-of-71 shots themselves for 46.5 percent. The Comets also tallied 26 points at the free-throw line, taking advantage of 30 foul shots. SRSU finished just 11-of-21 at the charity stripe.
After a slow start by both teams, the Comets found themselves trailing 5-4 just 4:10 into the game before Kilgore started turning the tables with her first basket of the game to put UTD ahead for good (6-5) at the 15:37 mark. From that point, the Comets rattled off 19 unanswered points over the next five minutes and were ahead by 19 (24-5) with 10:19 remaining in the first half. UTD then pushed its lead to 20 points (32-12) on a
Kirstie McGillick jumper at 7:28 and led 49-26 after Bronsnahan scored just before halftime.
The Comets then started the second half with two quick Kilgore layups and moved out to a 29-point advantage (62-33) five minutes in. A short run by the Lady Lobos got SRSU back as close as 25 (62-37) with 13:10 to go, but UTD responded with a 24-9 run that put it ahead by its largest margin at 86-46 with just 4:05 remaining after a Hess three-pointer. Only four three-pointers from the Lady Lobos in the final 2:37 cut the lead to its final 32-point margin.
UTD is now off for the next two weeks, returning home on Jan. 2 with a showdown against ASC rival Louisiana College at 5:30 pm.
