Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (01.25.13) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team battled back from a 14-point deficit in the final four minutes, but failed to overtake UT Tyler in a 62-57 loss that could have put the Comets in the American Southwest Conference lead.
UTD (13-3, 10-3 ASC) charged back from a 58-44 deficit at 4:01, putting together a 13-3 run that cut the Patriot lead down to 60-57 with :30 remaining. But a missed three-pointer from
Jo'Anna Davis after an offensive foul on UT Tyler (14-3, 12-2 ASC) with :15 remaining rattled off the rim and the Comets had to send the Patriots to the free throw line in the final seconds to attempt to get the ball back.
It was UTD's second loss this season to the ASC-leading Patriots, who now have a one-and-a-half-game lead over the Comets as the second half of the ASC schedule gets underway. A Comet lead would have moved UTD into the conference's top spot.
The Comets had no answer for the Patriots' interior game as center Brittany King dominated the paint, scoring 20 points and pulling down a remarkable 21 rebounds. In the second half, King's 11 rebounds were more than UTD's entire team was able to secure as the Patriots finished with a 45-26 edge on the boards. Tyler's other inside threat, She'Cara Humphrey had 17points and six rebounds.
To make matters worse, UTD never could get its outside game going, hitting just 2-of-17 three-point attempts - none until the final 13:57 of the contest. UT Tyler scored just once from beyond the arch.
Morgan Kilgore finished with 17 points for the Comets, scoring five in the final run. Davis came off the bench for her sixth straight double-figure game, pouring in 16 points.
Both teams shot approximately 40 percent from the floor. The Comets enjoyed a 13-of-19 advantage at the line while UTT hit 17-of-24.
UTD scored the first four points of the game and held the lead until UTT tied the score at 8-8 with 13:26 to play in the first half. The Patriots then ran off six straight points to go up, 14-8, with 12:00 minutes left. The Comets cut the lead down to one (14-13) with a Davis jumper at 10:12, but the Patriots answered quickly and finished off the defensive first half with just a 28-22 lead.
An unlikely three-pointer from post
Kimmie Grimes (just her fifth of the season) pulled UTD to within two (36-34) 6:03 into the second period, but the Patriots reeled off 13 of the next 15 points to take charge at 49-36 with 9:33 to go. The lead stayed in the 11-14 point range until Tyler was up, 58-44, with 4:03 to go when the Comets began their late rally.
