RICHARDSON, TX (01.30.14) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team took advantage of a cold start by Sul Ross State to run away with an 85-55 American Southwest Conference win over the Lady Lobos Thursday night.
The Comets (15-3, 12-3 ASC) scored 28 of the first 36 points in the game to build an early cushion against SRSU (1-17, 0-15 ASC) in the first 11 minutes, then expanded the lead with a 40-25 second half on their way to the home victory.
Senior
Morgan Kilgore re-asserted herself inside, leading UTD with 21 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Jo'Anna Davis again came off the bench to knock down 19 points and lead the team with 12 boards. Freshman
Sarah Wisor also hit a pair of three-point shots on her way to 10 points while
Madi Hess,
Amber Brown and
Kimmie Grimes combined for 27 rebounds. UTD completely controlled the boards against the Lady Lobos, 59-29.
In the first 10:28 of the game, the Comets jumped out to a 28-8 lead before SRSU narrowed the gap to 41-30 (1:30) with a 22-13 run. At the break, Kilgore had 11 points and UTD was up 45-30.
The Lady Lobos chipped back at that lead, but could get no closer than 10 points (45-35) with still 18:42 to play. That's when the Comets kicked into gear again. UTD went on an 18-6 run that ended with a Hess three-pointer to put the margin back at 22 points (63-41) with 12:03 remaining. The Comets then finished the game outscoring SRSU, 22-14, with 15 players seeing action.
UTD led by 30 (82-52) with 2:56 remaining on a Grimes free throw, then finished the game with the 30-point edge again.
UTD shot just 38.4 percent (28-of-73), but picked up 23 points at the foul line with 23-of-28 shooting. SRSU meanwhile was held to 35.5 percent (22-of-62), but had just five points at the line. Both teams connected on six three-pointers.
The Comets are back in action Saturday with a home match against Howard Payne at 1:00 pm. UTD narrowly defeated the Lady Jackets in December, 66-62.
