RICHARDSON, TX (07.30.15) - UT Dallas junior third baseman
Brandon George has earned yet another postseason honor as he was given the Carroll Berringer Award from the Dallas-Fort Worth Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).
George, a native of Spring, becomes the second Comet to claim the honor, awarded top non-Division I baseball player in the Metroplex. In 2012, former UTD standout Chase Brown received the honor. Dallas Baptist's Brandon Koch was the recipient of the Howard Green Award, given to the Metroplex' D-I Player of the Year. Both George and Koch will receive their awards at 2015-16 campus events from SABR Chapter President Paul Rogers and awards' committee members.
George had arguably two of the best back-to-back hitting seasons in UTD annals while garnering a slew of national honors. He was first team All-West Region by D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). He was also a first team All-American Southwest Conference selection for the second year in a row after leading the ASC with a .411 batting average.
Â
He paced the Comets with 13 doubles, seven home runs, 51 runs-batted-in, and 32 runs – all team highs – while stroking two triples. He was one of only five players from ASC chosen in 2015 as All-West Region by D3baseball.com and was a second team all-region pick by the publication as a sophomore in 2014. George also led the Comets of 14-year veteran head coach
Shane Shewmake to a 29-17 overall record and runner up finish in the 2015 ASC postseason tourament.
Â
The kudos celebrate the memories of the late SABR Metroplex chapter original president Green, who was a legend in Texas professional and college baseball circles for over six decades and also served in several elected capacities in Tarrant County; and Fort Worth Cats standout and longtime SABR member Beringer, who pitched in professional baseball for 14 years, was 1959 Texas League Player of the Year with the Fort Worth Cats and served as a coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1961-72) and Philadelphia Phillies (1973-78).
