Box Score 2 SEGUIN, TX (02.18.17) - The UT Dallas baseball team improved to 6-1 on the young season after earning two wins over No. 10-ranked Texas Lutheran Saturday afternoon to close out a three-game weekend sweep of the Bulldogs in non-conference play.
The Comets continue non-conference play next weekend with a three-game home series with Hendrix College. The two teams will play a 2 p.m. single game Friday before squaring off in a 12 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.
GAME 1 - UTD 4, TLU 1
The Comets (5-1) plated three runs in the top of the 3rd to take control of the contest and added an insurance run in the 6th frame of the seven-inning contest.
Ruben Renteria (1-0) picked up his first win as a Comet as he scattered five hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
UTD got on the board with one out in the 3rd when
Barry Casey brought home
Isaiah Swann with a single to right field. The Comets would then take advantage of two TLU errors, allowing
Ryan Burciaga to score before adding a third run on a
Connor Scruggs single to center, scoring Casey.
Up 3-1 in the 6th, the Comets completed the scoring with an RBI single by
Mathew Deacon, scoring
Luke Richter.
Both Richter and Swann were 1-for-2 with a run scored while Burciaga and Deacon were 1-for-3.
Tyler Keegan picked up his first save of the season after a scoreless seventh.Â
GAME 2 - UTD 8, TLU 4
The Comets scored six unanswered runs after falling behind to TLU, 4-2, in the 2nd to complete the weekend series sweep of the Bulldogs with a 8-4 victory.
UTD reliever
Cole Hanson picked up the win as he tossed scoreless 5.0 innings after taking over for Comet starter Jordan Muprhy. Hanson struck out four Bulldogs without issuing a walk, while giving up just three hits. Murphy gave up three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work.
The Comets struck first with RBI singles by Casey and Richter in the top of the 1st to provide UTD a quick 2-0 advantage. However, TLU countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame and two more in the 2nd to grab a 4-2 lead.
UTD cut into the Bulldog lead in the 3rd with another Casey RBI single and then plated three runs in the 5th to retake the lead, 6-4. Richter knotted the game, 4-4, when he was plunked with the bases loaded and
Garrett Uhl gave UTD the lead with a pinch-hit single to left, scoring Casey and Scruggs.Â
The Comets added a run in the 6th on a bases-loaded, double-play ground ball by Casey and completed the scoring with an Swann RBI single in the 7th.
Casey went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI in the win as the only Comet with a multi-hit game.Richter and Uhl each had two RBI.
