Karen Alvarez is tied for fifth after the first round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship at the Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course on Tuesday.
The Comets shot a 331 (+39) and are tied with NYU in the 29-team field. Emory leads with a 315 (+23), followed by George Fox (+26), Washington-St. Louis (+27) and Carnegie Mellon (+27).
Alvarez, playing in her third consecutive NCAA Championship, is only two strokes off the lead with a +3 76 on the par 73 course. She sank two birdies and made 11 pars, including the final seven of the round.
Karen Lee and
Sofia Trevino are tied for 47th with an 83 (+10) and
Maddy Vilven had a +16, 89 and is tied for 97th.Â
Nina McMurtrey from Centre is in the individual lead with a +1, 74.Â
The Comets were tied for third with the most birdies made in the round with eight.
UTD will tee off the second round on Wednesday at 12:10 p.m. CT. They will be paired with Centre and Amherst.
