Box Score 2 ABILENE, TEXAS - If nothing else, the UT Dallas women's soccer team may have shown that it belongs among the elite of American Southwest Conference once again. But the Comets would just as soon have something more to show for it than adding yet another tie with conference powerhouse Hardin-Simmons to their ledger.
The UTD women, who had tied or lost a one-goal game to the nationally-ranked Cowgirls for eight straight meetings, made it nine Saturday afternoon with another 0-0 double-overtime regular season tie. The Comets did snap an HSU league winning streak that dated back more than two seasons with the tie, but it was of little consolation to UTD. Since winning the American Southwest Conference championship in 2002, the Comets have battled conference powerhouse Hardin-Simmons nine times now without picking up another win.
UTD (5-3-3, 3-1-1) started the weekend in Abilene off Friday by trouncing the winless McMurry women's team, 9-0. The 1-0-1 weekend leaves UTD at 3-1-1 in ASC play and in sixth place behind HSU (16 pts.) The Comets will, however, have several chances to move up over the next few weeks as they face several of the teams ahead of them.
Against Hardin-Simmons, the Comets managed just 11 shots with four of those coming in the first overtime period. The Cowgirls (6-2-3, 5-0-1) had 18 shots, forcing the UTD defense and goalkeeper
Andrea Jones into seven saves. UTD managed just four shots on goal against the HSU defense.
The Comets enjoyed a different success on Friday against McMurry. UTD dominated the game offensively, outshooting McMurry 32-1. The Comets raced out to a 5-0 halftime advantage, then added four more goals in the second half as freshman
Katie Makanani finished off a hat trick with two goals early in the second period.
Makanani got her first goal just 7:02 into the game off a
Kristina Kinner assist, then
Leah Bowyer scored twice in a span of less than two minutes with assists from
Amanda Kallus and
Caitlin Perdue to make it 3-0 just 21:09 into the match.
Perdue then took a turn, scoring back-to-back goals at the 26:28 and 39:23 marks.
Britney Schuelke assisted on the first.
Haley Renfro and
Evan Jones scored late unassisted goals for the Comets. McMurry, still winless on the year at 0-7, fell to 0-4 in ASC play.
