Box Score 2 MEMPHIS, TN - Defense has been the calling card of the UTD women's soccer team the last couple of seasons, and the Comet defenders did get their 2008 season off to a good start, giving up just two goals in 200 minutes of soccer at the Rhodes College Tournament.
Unfortunately, the Comet offense managed just a single goal over the weekend and had to settle for a 0-1-1 start to the season after a double-overtime 0-0 tie with Birmingham Southern and a 2-1 loss to host Rhodes.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Andrea Jones had to make just two saves as UTD dominated the ball against BSU in the Saturday opener. The Comets, however, also managed just two shots on goal and just seven total shots overall.
Jones was a little busier on Sunday, stopping five shots, but an unassisted goal by Rhodes just 2:10 into the game gave the Lynx the lead. UTD later tied the score when freshman
Leah Bowyer scored on a
Britney Schuelke assist, but Rhodes regained the advantage 3:30 before halftime and neither team could alter the score any further in the second period.
UTD again managed just seven shots, but four were on goal. Rhodes had 15 attempts with seven on goal.
