Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (10.31.09) – Overtime heroics catapulted the Comets to a 2-1 win over visiting Concordia on Saturday—and punched UT Dallas' ticket to the ASC Tournament.
Cassie Lydick scored her second goal in as many games, this time connecting on a game-winner in the 98th minute to cap another dramatic finish for the Comets this week. Two days prior,
Emily George found the back of the net in the 101st minute in UTD's 2-1 victory against UT Tyler, reviving the Comets' playoff hopes with three days left in the regular season.
UTD will now advance as the No. 6 seed to the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament next weekend at Hardin-Simmons University. UTD opens the tournament with a 2 pm match Friday against Mississippi College.
On Saturday, George also scored —her fourth strike of the season—just over five minutes into the game. She uncorked a chip shot from the left corner that sailed over the head of CTX goalkeeper Teysha Silvage, giving UTD an early 1-0 edge.
The Tornados responded with a goal of their own in the 61st minute as Lya Morfitt tapped in a cross from Dalaine Whitlock. And, despite outshooting CTX 27-2, the Comets failed to score a go-ahead goal in regulation.
Instead, Lydick received a through-ball from
Hannah Kwang in the waning minutes of overtime and beat Silvage in a one-on-one inside CTX's box.
UTD is now 9-0 all-time against the Tornadoes, outscoring them 24-1 in the past four meetings between the two ASC programs.
Gridlocked in a fight with Howard Payne for the ASC sixth seed entering Saturday, UTD clinched a league tournament berth with the win. Mary Hardin-Baylor notched a 2-0 win over HPU Saturday afternoon, quashing the YellowJackets' postseason hopes. Even if HPU won, UTD still would have claimed possession of sixth-place, as the Comets held the tiebreaker by beating the YellowJackets 2-0 earlier this season.
