RICHARDSON, TX (02.12.09) - The UT Dallas baseball team could not come up with an answer to offset a three-home run performance by Hardin-Simmons Thursday afternoon as the Cowboys ruined the Comets' home debut by posting a 4-3 victory at the UTD Complex.
HSU (1-2) erased a first-inning 2-0 Comet lead with a two-run homerun from J.T. Armstrong in the 4th inning, went ahead with a solo shot in the 5th from Kevin Ellison, then got what turned into the game winner from Armstrong again in the 8th after a late UTD rally fell short.
The Comets (2-2) jumped on HSU starter Sam Walker for a two-run first with doubles from
Randy Lorber and
Johnnie Martinez, but did not get another hit until the 8th inning. UTD had other chances, but base-running mistakes cost the team runners in the 2nd and 3rd innings, then ended the game in the 9th after UTD had pulled to within a run.
In UTD's final at-bat, a pair of walks and a
Adam Hudec single against HSU ace Kyle Barton loaded the bases for centerfielder
Neal Gordon. Gordon launched a deep sacrifice fly ball to left field that allowed
Chris Biguenet to score, but trailing pinchrunner
Tim Scott (running for Hudec) got caught between second and third base and was run down for the final out of the game.
UTD got six innings from starter
Drew Waggoner, who was charged with just four hits. Two, however, were HSU home runs and cost him a loss.
Lorber was the only Comet with more than one hit, as UTD managed just six hits - all but one coming in the 1st, 8th and 9th inning.
