Comet Offense Still Looking For Back of Net

THE LACK OF SCORING HAS PUT THE PRESSURE ON THE COMET DEFENSE.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GEORGETOWN/SAN ANTONIO, TX (09.13.09) - The UT Dallas women's soccer team has still only one goal to show for its offensive efforts five games into the season after dropping a pair of road games, 1-0 to Southwestern on Friday and 4-0 to Trinity Sunday.

The road games were the final tuneups for the Comets, now 0-3-2 heading into their American Southwest Conference opener next Saturday with the University of the Ozarks.

Southwestern, which entered the match undefeated to start the season, scored the only goal it would need off its first shot just 6:34 into the match Friday and kept the Comets at bay for the next 83:26 as UTD managed just seven shots and forced just three opponent saves. Southwestern, meanwhile, had 15 shots and put eight on goal, making for a busy afternoon for UTD goalkeeper Andrea Jones.

Freshman Katelyn Flory got the start in net against the always-powerful Trinity, which entered the match at 3-0 and already had three shutout wins under its belt. The Tigers didn't waste any time jumping on the UTD defense and chasing Flory from the game by scoring three goals in the game's first 11:12. Even after Jones came in in relief, Trinity continued to pepper the net, outshooting UTD 16-1 in the first half. Jones made a number of dramatic saves, including stopping a penalty kick situation just before the half.

It was the first time UTD had surrendered more than one goal in a game. The Comets managed just five shots the entire match, putting just one on goal.

The Comets have had to open the season battling injuries in their offensive corps as first senior Kristina Kinner (who led the team in scoring as a freshman) and sophomore Leah Bowyer (last year's top scorer) have both missed playing time.
