Box Score TYLER, TX (10.23.10) – The UT Tyler Patriots may indeed be one of the top two teams in the American Southwest Conference this season, but that didn't seem to bother the UT Dallas women's soccer team one bit Saturday afternoon.
On an overcast and windy afternoon, the Comets got a game-winning goal from leading scorer
Leah Bowyer 2:32 into the second overtime period to claim a 2-1 victory over UT-Tyler and temporarily take over second place in the ASC standings. UTD (11-5-1 overall) improved to 9-2-1 in conference, 1/3 of a point ahead of the Patriots (11-4-0, 9-2-0) with the victory, though UTT has two more chances to move back ahead in the standings next weekend while the Comets have just one regular season game left.
Bowyer's goal came after a stellar defensive effort by the Comets, who were under attack all afternoon long by a deep and aggressive Patriot squad that outshot UTD, 28-8. Despite the disparity, the UTD back line kept the pressure away from goalkeeper
Andrea Jones for the most part. When they didn't, Jones responded with seven solid saves.
In contrast, the Comets managed just two shots on goal all afternoon, but got both past UTT keeper Morgan Dux.
Sophomore
Emily Hokanson escaped on a counter-attack breakaway midway through the first half and put the Comets ahead early, 1-0. Just before halftime, UTT countered with what would be its only goal, with Courtney Crowson scoring off a blocked Kasey Kemp shot.
The victory extended UTD's win streak to seven straight matches and nine without a loss.
The Comet victory continued two year's worth of frustration for the UT Tyler women, who were knocked out of the the 2009 ASC Tournament with a shootout loss to the Comets, and have not defeated UTD since the first round of the 2007 Tournament.
