Errors Hamper UT Dallas in Pair of Road Losses to No. 3 East Texas Baptist

SEVEN CRITICAL ERRORS EXTENDED UTD'S LOSING SKID TO SEVEN GAMES

DURAN WAS 3-FOR-3 AND SCORED FOUR RUNS IN GAME 2 OF SATURDAY'S DOUBLEHEADER AT ETBU'S TAYLOR FIELD.
MARSHALL, TX (03.27.10) – The Comets, road weary after two weeks away from their Richardson campus, ended a treacherous six-game trip at East Texas Baptist on Saturday, faltering in a pair of losses, 5-0 and 11-7, to the No. 3 Lady Tigers.

UT Dallas (12-10, 2-6) failed to score in Game 1 and surrendered a 2-0 lead midway through Game 2, but the Comets committed seven errors throughout the afternoon at ETBU's Taylor Park. Every error opened a different offensive door for the Lady Tigers (19-2, 7-1), who extended UTD's losing skid to seven games.

Six of those seven games were dropped, justifiably, to the top three teams in the country—No. 3 ETBU, No. 2 UT-Tyler and No. 1 Louisiana College.

UTD will return home for the first time in 17 days against UTT on Tuesday, March 30. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4:00 pm.

UTD 0, ETBU 5 (Box score)

The Comets remained mired in their hitting slump—they combined to bat just .167 in four games against UTT and LC—and went 4-for-25 against the Lady Tigers in Game 1. ETBU ace Ayrika Henderson (9-1) fanned seven Comets in 6 2/3 innings of work.

A series of UTD gaffes in the 3rd frame resulted in a trio of ETBU runs, only one of which was earned. Haley Starkey, in her first game playing shortstop, committed a throwing error that scored ETBU's Stacy Havner, and an Anna Knutson mistiming in centerfield plated Lya Swaner.

Neither team scored in the final 3 ½ innings.

Starkey was the only Comet to record a multi-hit outing at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two singles. Caysie Norum and Courtney Kuebler each added base hits. Mallory Meyers (6-4) pitched a complete game for UTD, striking out three.

UTD 7, ETBU 11 (Box score)

Norum's three-run blast in the 6th headlined UTD's 10-hit performance against ETBU hurlers Alicia Wright, who was pulled after 3 2/3 innings, and Henderson (10-1). The home run, Norum's sixth of the year, trimmed ETBU's lead to 8-7, but the Lady Tigers rattled off three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

UTD held a 2-0 advantage until the 3rd, when three costly errors paved the way for ETBU's colossal five-run outburst. Two of the runs were unearned. The Comets never recovered.

Norum and Natalie Duran were each 3-for-3 at the plate, with Duran crossing the plate four times throughout Game 2. Norum's four RBIs brought her season total to 24—a team-best in 2010.

Jeni Olbeter
(4-6) lasted all six innings on the mound, allowing 15 hits and retiring 14 of the 29 batter she faced. Henderson, who gave up the homer to Norum, was awarded her second win of the day after throwing for 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
