Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.10.10) – The UT Dallas women's soccer team did everything but beat national power Trinity University Friday night, falling 2-1 on a penalty kick in overtime of a physical, controversy-filled game on the Comets' home field.
Trinity, which was ranked nationally before falling 4-0 to Hardin-Simmons last week, dominated the game statistically, but needed senior Danika Wright to put the ball into the upper right corner past a diving
Andrea Jones 4:49 into overtime to escape with the win. Wright got the one-on-one opportunity after a teammate was tackled on a charge in the box, drawing a foul and arguments from UTD coach
John Antonisse, who claimed the contact was incidental.
Antonisse was already agitated after sophomore
Cassie Lydick drew a red card at 56:32 mark for retaliating for contact from Trinity's Allyson Hunter, which earned her a yellow card. The red card forced UTD to play the remainder of what was a scoreless game down one player.
Despite a 23-5 edge in shots and 10 shots on goal by the Tigers, the Comets were still in the match in the second half. It wasn't until the 79th minute that Trinity scored what looked like it might be the game-winner when Shelby Guenthardt dribbled free through the UTD defense and pushed a shot past Jones.
But before the Tigers could celebrate, UTD answered three minutes later when
Katie Makanani (playing her first match after an injury) lifted a high shot that
Leah Bowyer redirected with a header past Trinity keeper Katie Garrett to tie the score and send it into overtime. Before that, UTD's only other true scoring chance came on a long free kick from Makanani earlier in the half that just about eluded the 5-foot-6 Garrett high.
UTD, now 2-2 on the season, gets one day of rest before hosting Southwestern University Sunday afternoon.
