Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.12.10) – As upset as UTD women's soccer coach John Antonisse was with the way his team's emotional loss to Trinity University Friday night was officiated, the Comet coach was almost as disturbed with the way his team played in a third straight loss to Southwestern University Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (3-1), despite giving up an early surge by the Comets (now 2-3), were able to hold on for a 1-0 victory in UTD's final non-conference match of the season.
UTD took control of the game early, dominating possession and putting together an early 6-3 shot advantage. The Comets tested Southwestern keeper Sarah Nonaka several times with quality shots, but could not get anything to go in. Meanwhile, UTD's defense kept the ball at the Pirate end of the field, allowing only one of three shots to get anywhere near keeper
Andrea Jones.
But with just 2:39 to go before intermission, the entire tempo of the game changed. The Pirates finally put together their first real offensive threat of the game, scoring the game's only goal on a scramble in front of the net off a corner kick. Jillian Curran punched the ball past Jones and Southwestern had the only goal it would need and got a spark of energy it would carry into the second half on this hot, humid afternoon.
While Southwestern seemed to pick up the energy level after intermission, the Comets faded in the final 45 minutes. UTD did manage just seven more shots in the second period, but only forced a couple of saves by Nonaka.
Sophomore
Emily Hokanson did get credit for seven shots, putting two on goal for UTD.
UTD opens American Southwest Conference play Thursday night at home against Mississippi College.
