Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.16.10) – The Mississippi College Choctaws avenged a last-second loss to the UT Dallas women's soccer team at last year's American Southwest Conference tournament Thursday night, opening the 2010 ASC season with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Comets.
UTD scored just 3:04 into the match, but never really threatened again as the unbeaten Lady Choctaws (4-0-1, 1-0-0) rallied with single goals in each half to claim the win.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Comets (2-4-0, 0-1-0), who started off the season with a pair of wins, but have not won since Sept. 3.
Junior
Katie Makanani scored her first goal of the season to give UTD a 1-0 lead just 3:04 into the match when
Leah Bowyer and usual goalkeeper
Andrea Jones (playing in the field) redirected a ball to her in front of the net.
Ironically, it was Makanani who scored the dramatic last-second goal at the conference tournament last November that tied a quarterfinal match with MC and sent it into overtime, where the Comets won on a shootout.
But Thursday night, the heroics ended early for Makanani or any of the other Comets. While UTD tried desperately to score again, the Lady Choctaws tied the game at 1-1 just 11:28 later on a 30-yard straight-on shot from Hannah Langley that slipped through the fingers of UTD keeper
Katelyn Flory. MC then took the lead 13:11 into the second half on a rush up the middle that Molly Dearborn finished off the serve of Hollye Henderson.
The two teams were fairly even on shots, with MC holding a 9-8 edge. Each team put five shots on goal.
UTD will look to break its skid Saturday when it hosts Louisiana College in its second ASC match of the season.
