Box Score ABILENE, TX (09.24.10) – It's been over seven seasons since the UT Dallas women's soccer team has been able to knock off their arch rival - the nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls.
There have been a couple of ties mixed in and a number of hard-fought battles, but the Cowgirls picked up their 13th win over the Comets in the last 15 meetings Friday, blanking UTD, 2-0, in an American Southwest Conference game at the HSU field.
The Comets made it a battle once again for HSU, but the undefeated Cowgirls (now 6-0 overall, 3-0 ASC) got single goals in each half, and held off at least a few occasional UTD threats to claim the win. UTD fell to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference.
The Comets' last win over HSU was in the 2002 ASC Championship game. The two teams have tied twice since, in the 2004 ASC title game and in the 2006 regular season.
The Cowgirls put up a 20-9 shot advantage, but the Comets were able to keep things typically close with solid defense. On the offensive end, UTD was only able to put three shots on goal, forcing saves from HSU keeper Rebecca Roth. Just after Roth made her first save of the afternoon, however, the Cowgirls got the game winner on a goal off a pair of headers on the right side of the net from Deron Howard in the 24th minute.
At the 70:18 mark of the second half, a foul in the box on another HSU offensive charge set up Amy Kuykendall, the ASC's pre-season Offensive Player of the Year, for a penalty kick that she converted to make it 2-0.
Other than that, UTD 's defense and keeper
Andrea Jones withstood a number of HSU attacks as well as eight corner kicks, but made eight saves to keep the game close.
UTD will look to get back in the ASC win column Saturday when they move across town to take on winless McMurry at 2 pm.
