Box Score RICHARDSON, TX (09.30.10) – It's still early in the American Southwest Conference playoff chase, but UTD and Howard Payne – a couple of teams who are hoping to slip into the post-season around the middle of the pack somewhere – ended 110 minutes of offensive frustration Thursday night, leaving the field with a 1-1 double overtime tie.
The tie was the Comets' first of the season as UTD's record improved slightly to 4-5-1 on the season and an even 2-2-1 in conference play. The Lady Jackets settled for a tie for the third time this season and second time in ASC play, leaving with a 2-3-3, 1-2-2 mark.
The Comets simply could not get anything past HPU keeper Adrienne Walker, who made 11 saves as UTD outshot the LadyJackets, 28-12.
Cassie Lydick got the Comets' only goal when she got a second chance at a
Jean Francis shot that hit the crossbar and slipped it in to tie the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute. Howard Payne actually got on the board 14 minutes into the second half when Haley Clanahan split the Comet defense and had an open net after
Andrea Jones came out to stop another attacker.
UTD actually had a couple of early opportunities to take a first-half lead. Francis broke loose on a one-on-one charge at the net, but Walker went high to save a point-blank shot. Both teams had shots rattle off the crossbar a couple of times, but it was the backfield defense of both teams that kept the score from getting any higher. UTD took five shots in overtime, putting three on net, but could not come up with the game winner.
The Comets'
Leah Bowyer had a game-high 8-shot night and was stopped by four Walker saves.
UTD will face another of those teams in the middle Saturday when Mary Hardin-Baylor comes to town for a 1 pm match.
