RICHARDSON, TX (10.27.11) - On a cold, rainy night at the UTD Soccer Complex, senior
Leah Bowyer finished out her final regular season game by continuing to climb up the Comets' record book, tying a pair of school career records during a 4-0 win over Centenary College.
Carli Beckett and
Emily Hokanson paced UTD with a pair of goals each, but it was Bowyer who stole the show.
Bowyer didn't score as UTD recorded its 14th shutout win of the season, but the senior from Lubbock picked up a pair of assists during the match, moving her into a tie for the lead in both career assists and career points scored in the UTD record book. She could easily move to the top of each category before her career is over as the Comets (15-3, 12-1 ASC) open play in their 10th straight American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament next weekend (Nov. 4-5-6).
Bowyer now has 18 assists for the season, putting her four-year career total at 29 assists, tied with Theresa Buckles (2003-2006) for first place in that category. She also now has 131 career points, which matches the totals posted by Kristen Andrews (1999-2002), a UTD Athletic Hall of Honors inductee.
Bowyer is still six goals shy of the school record for most goals scored with 51 total goals, tied for second place with Natalie Taylor, who will be inducted into the Hall this November.
Bowyer and her teammates were on the attack all night long against Centenary, outshooting the Ladies, 38-3 and putting 16 shots on goal. Bowyer led the attack with nine shot, three on goal. But it was a trio of teammates who took the scoring honors Thursday night.
Beckett got her fourth goal of the season to put UTD ahead to stay in the 29th minute on a diving header into the corner of the net off a
Brittany Ansel corner kick
After intermission and as the mist, rain and northerly breezed kicked up, the Comets started a barrage of scoring. First, UTD made it 2-0 off Hokanson's first goal, a ball that defelected off a Centenary defender 4:06 into the second half. Bowyer then picked up her two assists on the final two goals, first setting up Hokanson with her fourth goal of the season at 57:01, then getting Beckett a second goal at 78:33.
Centenary, in its first season as a Division III school and ineligible for post-season play, finished its regular season at 9-8-1.
