RICHARDSON, TX (02.23.11) - Senior
Kyle Guest singled in senior
Grant Friddell with a shot up the middle in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Comets downed Bates College, 6-5, at the UTD Baseball Field Wednesday afternoon.
Friddell was involved in every run for the Comets as he reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored. He had a pair of doubles and a pair of walks in addition to a sacrifice fly.
The Comets (now 5-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Friddell plated senior
Jason Diemer and sophomore
Jake Wyand with a bases-loaded double to right-centerfield. Bates answered in the top of the third as they scored an unearned run on a ground ball to second base.
The Comets got the run back in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by freshman
Elisha Settoon, scoring Friddell. UTD then picked up a fourth run in the sixth frame on a sacrifice fly by Friddell, scoring Wyand. Bates scored two more unearned runs in the top of the seventh to draw within a run, 4-3. But, UTD pushed across what seemed to be an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Friddell scored from second base after a wild pitch followed by a throwing error by the Bobcat catcher.
Bates tied the game in the top of the ninth, 5-5, on back-to-back RBI hits by Pat Murphy and Chris Burke. The Bobcats would threaten to add more runs in the ninth, but the Comets thwarted the rally with a double play. Bates would again threaten in the top of the 10th with runners on first and second with one, but another double play brought the Comets back to the plate and set up the game-winning heroics. Friddell opened the 10th with his second double of the day and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior
Clint Dunham, setting up the one-out, RBI single by Guest.
Sophomore right-hander
Cameron Brown mowed down the first six batters he faced, including two by strikeout, and left the game with a 3-1 lead but was not a factor in the decision. Brown tossed 5.0 innings, giving up one unearned run three hits, striking out three with a walk. Junior right-hander
Larry Bolding took over to start the sixth frame and retired the side en route to a 2.0-inning performance, giving up two unearned runs on two hits with a strikeout. Freshman
Calvin Campbell tossed a hitless eighth frame before junior
Max Willard entered in the ninth, giving up two runs on three hits. Willard (2-0) would complete the game, holding the Bobcats scoreless in the 10th to pick up the win.
Junior
Jacob Starnes and Dunham each joined Friddell with multi-hit games, both going 2-for-4.
The Comets return to action this weekend as they host McMurry in a three-game American Southwest Conference series. The two teams will play a single game Friday at 2 p.m. before a 12 p.m. Saturday doubleheader.
